Thank you for the list. I’m not sure if the tributes will be in the Honorees’ alphabetical order. Also, I tried to reply to your article, but it didn’t show up.

I’ve got all of the KCH ceremonies recorded from the past 4+ decades and sometimes go back to watch all of them. It’s my second most favorite program of each year, following the Oscars. So I am a big fan.

Last night’s program was the worst one they have ever produced. I know they had to make adjustments because of social distancing, but why have production numbers presented when the honorees couldn’t watch and enjoy. They could have easily had those dance numbers on stage in front of those getting the tributes. Their reactions are often some of the best parts of each show.

And I never in my life thought the KCH would allow lip syncing on one of their shows, and there was plenty of that.

Just horrible. Everybody involved should be ashamed and commit themselves to never do any things again when they return to normal in December.

But how do you REALLY feel, Chris? 🙂

And I tend to agree. Not having a full ceremony in the Opera House as usual made sense, but the program that ultimately aired was such a messy hodgepodge that didn’t really capture what I imagine was a beautiful week of events for the honorees at the various other Kennedy Center spaces. I know we are in a rapidly evolving time and things will likely look different by then, but I really hope the Tony Awards don’t try anything like this for its CBS primetime special.

I liked what I saw, even though it wasn’t what I expected. I enjoyed the dance/music number in the pool, but I agree the numbers belonged on stage. Also, they had the taxi for the Fame sequence, but why wasn’t anyone dancing on it?

Chris, do you have the complete videos of the previous ceremonies? Also, I agree that the performances were meant to be shown before the honorees, and the pre-taped segments weren’t as effective. Plus, I didn’t approve of the lip-syncing either.

Now the honorees have come out:

    Justino Diaz
    Berry Gordy
    Lorne Michaels
    Bette Midler
    Joni Mitchell

All have some musical chops: an opera singer, a record producer, a singer-songwriter, an actress/singer, and a comedy producer who featured musical acts.

I am already anticipating this to be an amazing show, featuring I’ll Be There, Wind Beneath My Wings, Big Yellow Taxi, Rigoletto, and then some musical comedy numbers.

Other suggested titles: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Hello in There (in honor of John Prine), River, Blue, My Guy, Dancing in the Street, and I think the Lorne tribute will include some recreations of SNL bits, like the Chippendales sketch.

Prediction: Miss Ross will present Berry with his honor 🙂

I would like to see Diana Ross at the ceremony, along with Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and Lionel Richie. Who do you have in mind for the 45th KCH? Right now I would name:

    Burt Bacharach
    Cynthia Gregory
    Spike Lee
    Liza Minelli
    Arturo Sandoval

I agree with this article that the KCH have drifted from the fine arts to pop culture: https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/pop-go-the-honors/2015/07/23/dde57ce6-2fbd-11e5-97ae-30a30cca95d7_story.html What Oprah and Letterman have done isn’t the sort of medium for which the Kennedy Center was established.

As for the Berry Gordy tribute, it should include performances from Ain’t Too Proud and MJ: The Musical.
