So far 12 opera singers got the KCH:

    Marian Anderson (1978)
    Leontyne Price (1980)
    Beverly Sills (1985)
    Rise Stevens (1990)
    Marilyn Horne (1995)
    Jessye Norman (1997)
    Placido Domingo (2000)
    Luciano Pavarotti (2001)
    Joan Sutherland (2004)
    Grace Bumbry (2009)
    Martina Arroyo (2013)
    Justino Diaz (2021)

So it was actually done two years in a row, in 2000-2001. Seems like they should honor more opera personalities.

Any day now we’ll find out the honorees. With “What the World Needs Now is Love” featured at a recent Ukraine benefit, it’s about time Burt Bacharach gets the KCH: https://www.nbc.com/ukraine-answering-the-call/video/ukraine-answering-the-call/8000006580

Still on the edge of our seats. Since Mark Morris is staging a production of Burt Bacharach songs I would expect either to get the KCH this year.

Wow. Both Clooney and Grant are only 61 and there are so many artists I expected would be honored before them. While I do appreciate their contributions, this feels more like a play for a broader audience than a lifetime achievement award recognition.

But Grant started over 40 years ago and Clooney over 35 years ago. It’s not always about age but also years in the business. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, LL Cool J were really too young on age but had been going forever when they got selected.

U2 getting in is great. U2 getting in the same year as Gladys Knight is even better. Clooney getting in…..not sure im iffy.

Amy Grant? Really? Not that she hasn’t done a lot but, well I’m not a fan of Contemporary Christian music.

Denzel Washington started over 40 years ago— St. Elsewhere premiered in 1982– and as much as I like George Clooney, for him to get it before Denzel is, in my view, an embarrassment.

They approach several people each year who aren’t able to make it work on their calendar (and some just decline). How do you know they didn’t ask Denzel? He would certainly accept but maybe December 4 weekend didn’t work for him.

There are several film stars even older who I can’t believe haven’t been chosen at some point — Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman (although he hasn’t accepted anything from anybody since retirement).

I’m surprised they haven’t picked Burt Bacharach, or even Tommy Tune. As for Amy Grant, why not Shirley Caesar?

Aside from Gladys Knight and U2, This years honorees are a bit lackluster. Where’s Denzel? Where’s Burt Bacharach? Where’s Liza? Where’s Alan Menken? Where’s Mick Jagger? Where’s Jane Fonda? Where’s Francis? Where’s Arturo? Where’s real legends that has stood the test of time for more than 3 decades?

The Honors hadn’t been the same since George Stevens Jr left. The committee and producers have been turning it into the Grammys 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Grammys is rather accurate. I wouldn’t call Tania León lackluster, we need more members of the fine arts than just one token out of five. But Amy Grant is definitely lackluster, of course the same can be said of Contemporary Christian music in general.
