Who will receive the Kennedy Center Honors this year? My guess is:

    Cynthia Gregory
    Spike Lee
The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards)
    Bernadette Peters
    Arturo Sandoval

I already have picks for next year:

    Whoopi Goldberg
    Madonna
    Johnny Mathis
    Kiri te Kanawa
    Tommy Tune

As for this list: https://www.goldderby.com/gallery/kennedy-center-honors-50-entertainers-who-deserve-to-be-selected/ Since Jerry Lee Lewis and Burt Bacharach are no longer with us I would add Mark Morris and Alan Menken to the list.

Good picks, however there should be at least one in each group from opera, dance or classical music.

True, however Sandoval is mostly known for jazz and Lopez and Menken work mainly in theatre. I meant someone who does the fine arts primarily.

I’m pulling for Bernadette Peters. Her tribute should include “Time Heals Everything,” “Move On,” “Tell Me On a Sunday,” “Children Will Listen,” plus I thought it would be nice to include the Muppets with the song Bernadette first sang on The Muppet Show, “Just One Person.”

They don’t all have to be fine arts but I like those picks, though I’m not sure about Kathleen Battle, given her egocentric reputation. I just think it’s lowbrow to have three of the five slots go to pop stars and only one going to someone known for the sort of performance for which the center was built.

I’ve got 40 picks by categories:

    OPERA
    Renee Fleming
    Anna Netrebko
    Renata Scotto
    Kiri Te Kanawa
    Frederica Von Stade

    DANCE
    Michael Flatley
    Savion Glover
    Cynthia Gregory
    Peter Martins
    Mark Morris

    CLASSICAL MUSIC
    John Adams
    Vladimir Ashkenazy
    Meredith Monk
    Andre Rieu
    Pinchas Zukerman

    JAZZ
    Dee Dee Bridgewater
    Bela Fleck
    Wynton Marsalis
    Bobby McFerrin
    Arturo Sandoval

    THEATRE
    Tony Kushner
    Liza Minelli
    Stephen Schwartz
    Bernadette Peters
    Tommy Tune

    CONTEMPORARY MUSIC
    Shirley Caesar
    Madonna
    Johnny Mathis
    Queen Latifah
    The Rolling Stones

    FILM
    Michael Caine
    Glenn Close
    Francis Ford Coppola
    Spike Lee
    Sophia Loren

George Clinton should most definitely be this year’s recipient. I’m very surprised that hasn’t even happen for him yet. He and the Parliament-Funkadelic along with James Brown, Sly Stone and The Meters are the pioneers of funk, bringing it to the American culture.
He is the most sampled artist by hip hop artists other than James Brown. In fact, he is indirectly responsible for birthing the 90s g-funk sound of hip hop. Other than Earth Wind & Fire, he and the Parliament-Funkadelic influenced generations of eclectic artists and their music is timeless. They’re played at cookouts, birthdays, weddings, family reunions and concerts.
He’s long overdue for this ribbon rainbow for mixing his sophisticated and philosophical songwriting with his hooks and grooves and making the entire world boogie.
