I know we’re in the middle of Emmy season, so I am not sure whether it’s smart to start a post on a rather old show, but here we go.
I recently started watching Molly Dodd starring Blair Brown. I’ve read good things about the show and Brown was nominated for an emmy for each season. Now, I am not so sure what to think about this show. I am almost through season 1 and I am thinking of giving up.
I think the show is quite talky. The actors talk and talk and talk but not much wit comes out of them. The narration at the beginning of each episode is especially annoying as it’s just … there; no wit, no fun, no charm.
I guess I would like to hear some opinions on this show. Did the show get better with each season or is season 1 basically the template for all other seasons (then I will probably stop watching)? And, since it’s emmy season, was Brown ever considered a frontrunner for Actress in a comedy? Based on season 1 and her competition (Alley, Barr, Bergen, the golden girls) I’d say no way.

Where are you watching The Days & Nights of Molly Dodd?
Her first nomination was in 1987 and the nominees were:
Rue McClanahan – The Golden Girls – WINNER
Bea Arthur – The Golden Girls
Betty White – The Golden Girls
Jane Curtain – Kate & Allie
Blair Brown – The Days & Nights of Molly DoddHer second nomination was in 1988 and the nominees were:
Bea Arthur – The Golden Girls – WINNER

Kirstie Alley – Cheers
Blair Brown – The Days & Nights of Molly DoddMay 2, 2020 at 7:53 am #1203458696Also, I did not understand how Blair Brown got nominated for all 5 seasons, especially over Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan in 1990 and 1991.

Since I am also re-watching the golden girls, I cannot see in what way Brown was considered more worthy than the golden girls. But then, I’ve just seen the first season, so maybe it improves? Does it, btw? I really do not feel it and would love to hear the opinion of somebody who has seen the whole show.
Re: The Golden Girls – I also think they stopped nominating all of them due to some kind of fatigue. New shows emerged and the GG filling up three spots in one category was probably considered too much.

It was a dramedy in the late 80s, right after Moonlighting showed the world what that could be, and showed up around the same time as Hooperman and probably others shows I can’t remember tried it with less success with no laugh track at the 30 minute level. Creator Jay Tarses and star Blair Brown were both extremely well respected, which why I suspect they but never the show itself broke through at the Emmys. And after it was canceled by NBC little Lifetime picked it up, which put the network on the map and got it its first Emmy nominations, not long after cable networks were even permitted to get Emmy nominations! Brown in particular racking up nominations for all 5 seasons is extremely impressive, especially considering the competition: Phylicia Rashad, Kate & Allie, 3 Golden Girls, 4 Designing Women, Kirstie Alley, Candice Bergen, and, especially, Roseanne, who, despite being on a top rated show that always got John Goodman in was never able to dislodge Brown. I am also curious as to where you are watching it, as I’d like to see how it holds up compared to shows of today.
