Watching this. Nothing like viewing a delusional sociopath that everyone wants to throw money at.

March 8, 2022 at 4:48 am #1204836280This show is everything Inventing Anna wanted to be. So Good!
Saw the first three episodes and pleased with how they are humanizing Holmes but not for once make you empathize with her. She is a woman made of flesh and blood who made terrible mistakes and committed crimes not because she is a ‘girl boss’ but because she is an utterly selfish human being.
Amanda is bringing her A1 GAME. No way is this getting unnoticed. Hope the shows capitulates more hype and Hulu puts her might behind Amanda’s win! Supreme
ReplyCopy URLMarch 11, 2022 at 1:55 pm #1204841581Good but far from excellent and in quite a few ways somewhat disappointing. As a show so far it’s competently made but it just feels so conventional and like it doesn’t really have anything meaningful to say or add to the Elizabeth Holmes story. I’m not a snob who has something against shows with baity premises (Mrs. America and Fosse/Verdon were two of my favourite shows of their Emmy cycles) but as this just feels like an Oscar bait vehicle that has been stretched across eight episodes. We’re being taken through the story of Elizabeth Holmes’ story from adolescence to her trial and that’s pretty much it. Not only is it not episodic and the storytelling lacks depth but the narrative framing of telling it from the first person is just unsettling and hagiographic. By showing us Elizabeth Holmes’ story through her perspective and not through those of the people who worked with her (like The Inventor documentary did) and showing how she was “well intentioned” not only humanises her but it just feels like a narrative tool that is utilised to make the viewer feel sorry for her and really excuse the crimes she committed by arguing “oh but she wanted to create accessible healthcare”. A film with a real life anti hero like I, Tonya may have made us feel more empathetic towards Tonya Harding but at least it didn’t excuse her actions or shy away from the trauma that was inflicted on Nancy Kerrigan.
Anyway with this being said it’s still an entertaining show and I’ll continue it because I’m someone who has been quite fascinated by the Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos story for a while. I hope Amanda Seyfried gets nominated because she’s excellent here and carries the role well (she captures the sinister nature of Holmes as a character without avoiding turning her characterisation into a caricature) and the supporting cast do no wrong (I thought Metcalf was a striking scene-stealer in the premiere). It just feels like this is a show that was made with no intent than to be a glossy adaptation of an American scandal that is making a commercial and awards ploy and the flaws as a result of that feel really evident in the final product.

April 2, 2022 at 10:45 pm #1204895209there is a scene in the upcoming series finale of THE DROPOUT that is probably the best-written and best-acted thing I've watched so far this year. very excited for other people to watch it.

I still think Macy can get in because (although I personally thought he was the weakest of the cast) it’s still a showy and memorable role and voters seem to really like him but yeah I don’t know about Laurie.

April 24, 2022 at 9:44 am #1204929879I’m half-way through The Dropout. Although there is something amiss with the tone and it’s quite pedestrian and by the numbers in it’s story-telling, Amanda Seyfried cannot be denied. She is sensational as Elizabeth Holmes. Showcasing so much depth and substance while not for one second making the sociopath sympathetic. Stephen Fry also does some nice work here. It’s a B- mini-series so far with an A+ and dare I say potentially Emmy winning performance from Seyfried.
