I’ve only seen the first episode (and will be avoiding the internet for fear of spoilers until I’m done) but am impressed with how dark and gritty the show is already. The cinematography is gorgeous. Also really happy with the range shown by Emily in just the first episode, her chemistry with Chaske was spot on. Also Ciaran Hinds was scary af!

I watched the first episode on BBC2 which I guess will continue a weekly release, but then I noticed after that all 6 episodes are available on BBC iPlayer

It aired linearly at 9pm last night with all the episodes being dropped on IPlayer shortly after.
In the US I believe it only just launched today on Amazon as a binge.

ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2022 at 1:30 pm #1205149399Saw the first episode. It’s good, but not yet reimagining and subverting western tropes to the extent I was hoping from Blick. The central premise is fairly simple, but laid out well. Blunt is already excellent, but Hinds is exceptional in the long scene they share together mid-episode. Excited to see where it goes.

November 13, 2022 at 3:51 pm #1205150372Episode 4 was a major exercise in tension and subtlety. So much horror happening off screen…much needed back story established now I can’t wait for the final episodes. Rafe Spall was truly diabolical; he should be getting all the roles Tom Hardy gets

Definitely worth watching on UHD. I am really enjoying it and the performances and cinematography are excellent. Great cameos from Toby Stevens and Stephen Rea

ReplyCopy URLNovember 17, 2022 at 2:49 pm #1205158237Episode 1 was incredible. I love how fully realised Blunt and Spencer’s characters feel even though we know almost as much about them as the characters do of each other themselves.
I agree with most of what’s been said above but I just want to add that I really appreciate how colourful this series already feels from the offset. You rarely see that in a Western and it really helps to bring this story to life.

November 25, 2022 at 6:45 am #1205166370Finished this. The final scene between Blunt and Chaske (set to suitably mournful scoring) was incredible. My only gripe was that the final confrontation with Spall’s character felt too predictable, though Blunt was brilliant in that scene too.
Blick knows how to get brilliant performances out of his leads (following Gyllenhaal in The Honorable Woman and Coel in Black Earth Rising). I liked how fast-moving the script was, but ultimately his skilful direction was the main takeaway here – the climactic shooting scene in episode 5 is arguably the most showy example of this. If the show has legs, he should get in.

100% agree with this.
I do wish they’d considered a weekly release though.
