    Episode Title: “Meet the Lord”

Synopsis: Henry Shackleford, a young slave living in the Kansas territory in 1856, has a run-in with abolitionist John Brown, who mistakes him for a girl and promptly “frees” him. Believing Henry to be his good luck charm, Brown welcomes him into his ragtag army and nicknames him “Onion.” Donning a dress for the first time while dodging bullets, Onion quickly awakens to the life or death stakes in the battle over human bondage and witnesses Brown’s divinely inspired violent agenda: to free the land of slavery by any means necessary. Series premiere.

Excellent premiere. There is a lot of humor here and it worked very well.

Ethan Hawke is amazing as expected and I’m 95% confident he will win the Globe. Yeah, you heard right, 95%. Globes *LOVE* Showtime and this is a fantastic performance, I really think he will pull this off.

The actor who plays Henry was… a bit off? He was just ok, in my opinion.

Also I didn’t knew Ellar Coltrane would be in this show. As a Boyhood fan I loved this mini reunion.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

Ethan Hawke is wickedly funny and truly immersed in his role. I wasn’t expecting this to have so many hilarious moments given the subject matter.

This episode was more of a showcase for Joshua Caleb Johnson, with Ethan Hawke not appearing until the end of the episode. It’s already shaping up to be one of the best series of the year, and even early into the new fall season. The writing is superb, and it makes me want to get my hands on James McBride’s nowel right now. I think it’s just the kind of statement we need at the moment. Some great showcases here for Steve Zahn, Natasha Marc, and Crystal Lee Brown. Next week brings in Daveed Diggs as Frederick Douglass. Can’t wait to see more of this!

    Episode Title: “Mister Fred”

What a great performance by Ethan Hawke.  The character is over-the-top, but it never feels like over-the-top acting at all.

But it must also be said, in the second episode when Hawke doesn’t appear until the end, this is still extremely watchable, it’s not just Hawke.  Very well put together all-around.

Daveed Diggs was absolutely superb! He stole the show from everybody, which is a difficult task in a series like this. More, plz!
