A new screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, is in the works. Though this time, it will be as a television miniseries. A+E Studios and ITV Studios America are teaming up with writer Michael Hirst for this project. No network is involved yet, the producers are planning to shop the series around to premium cable and streaming outlets.

Here’s hoping this will be the first screen adaptation that does the novel justice. Thoughts?

Both film versions had their strengths, but the original is too boring and the remake is too over the top.

I hope that this can be the first adaptation that gets it right, because if this story is done justice, it’ll be excellent.

Actually, there’s been 5 screen adaptations of The Great Gatsby so far. There was a silent film version from 1926 starring Warren Baxter, another film adaptation from 1949 starring Alan Ladd, the 1974 version starring Robert Redford, a TV movie adaptation from 2000 starring Toby Stephens, and the most recent film version from 2013 starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

I happen to think that Baz Luhrmann made a perfect movie, but I am alone there.

This was inevitable with the book entering the public domain, but ugh.

Now, there’s another big screen adaptation in the works, but this one is going to be an animated film directed by William Joyce from a screenplay by Brian Selznick.
