*episode 3 spoilers*
As a fan of the game, I have mixed feelings. This episode was beautiful and very powerful emotionally. I even cried. Very good acting and writing. But at the same time, the purpose of this episode was… not clear. It didn’t advance the story. It feels useless by the end of it. And it was too different from the game.
The purpose of the run in with Bill (besides the car) in the game is basically to let the player and Joel see a cautionary tale. In the game, Bill is abandoned by Frank, the only person he has in the world, and is left a letter saying how much Frank hates him for cutting himself off from the world and living the way he does. Joel also lives a certain way, cutting himself off emotionally.
In the show, the letter from Bill also serves a similar purpose, only instead of angry bitterness it’s all about love. It says everything he needs to learn and everything the audience needs to know. It’s the same basic idea, just delivered differently: no man is an island, especially not now. And imo it was delivered masterfully to Joel, and the audience as well, as we see it play out with Bill and Frank.

Guest Actor, Directing, Writing, Editing and Cinematography will likely be won by this episode. As long as the series does not nosedive from here on out, this episode may have won it Drama Series as well. Episodes as well-crafted as this one only come around once every 5-10 years. Magnificent all around. Every other show on television/streaming faces a very daunting, if not impossible, task to deliver something better this year.

Emmy for Drama Series is going to HBO in one way or another with Sucession, House of the Dragon, and The Last of Us, but if every episode is as fire as the first three, Succession might not be the sure thing it was last time

January 30, 2023 at 10:16 am #1205274747If they can do the season finale justice, I honestly think it could be on the same level as this episode. How many seasons of television can say they have not just one but two stunning, iconic episodes that’ll be remembered for years? It’s possible that the finale won’t translate well to TV but based on these first three episodes, I think this is gonna be another Fun & Games, Waterworks, Saul Gone level of one upping itself constantly.

I hope you are right and I think it’ll continue to be strong but most reviews I read seemed to point to this episode as the high point of the season.

January 30, 2023 at 12:59 pm #1205275005It’s also up to # 5 on Itunes sales chart.
And I’m still a wreck from the episode too… It should win all the Emmys and yes to Offerman winning (but Bartlett was amazing too, tbh).

IMDb needs to do a verifies ratings system. Don’t know how they can do that for streaming services, but it’s just tough to trust any ratings on their site until they do and every single user based review should be verified.
This is homophobia. People either hate the gays or wanted a run of the mill action scene that has been done a million times in every zombies movie/show ever lol.
And now here I go making multiple accs to leave 10 star reviews.
