I knew it wasn’t going to reach the highs of episode 3 (duh) but I didn’t think it was as strong as the first two episodes either. It wasn’t bad but it just felt like not much happened and that’s too bad after last week’s episode got so much attention, I just wish they could have followed up with a stronger one.

February 5, 2023 at 7:17 pm #1205291219I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say this, but Sepinwall mentioned in his review that everything that happened in this episode will pay off in the next one.

February 6, 2023 at 2:24 am #1205293738Definitely the weakest episode so far, but it’s a filler episode before the next big highlight and is meant to focus on growing the Joel x Ellie relationship. Loved seeing Joel loosen up and the next episode looks great. Melanie was fine but given that she was acclaimed as terrifying or something like that let’s hope she antes up next episode.
Edit: For clarification, weakest for this show is an 8/10!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 6, 2023 at 2:17 pm #1205294714I guess I had lower expectations going into that episode after reading the reactions that it’s the worst one but I actually loved it. One of my concerns watching the show is that, so far, I thought it wasn’t doing that much of a good job building up Joel and Ellie’s relationship, which is so important to its story and especially to its climax. But this episode erased my concerns and I think is the first one that really showcases the chemistry between the two characters and actors. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are amazing together while also being the perfect Joel and Ellie respectively.

I just felt like why are all these hardened rebels taking orders from this Karen? The way she ignored that breach to focus on her personal vendetta/hunt for Henry…you just know what’s going to happen…
Really enjoyed the slower side to this episode though and the developing relationship between Joel and Ellie. She finally got him to laugh! It really bodes well for the rest of the series they have such good chemistry already…

As someone not familiar with the game, but understands that the relationship between Joel and Ellie is apparently super imperative to the narrative, I was worried that the show wasn’t really taking steps to give their bond depth — as in why someone watching should or would necessarily care about or be interested in their particular relationship. But this episode really explored the two characters and their individual personalities very, very well and I think that’s thanks to Pascal and Ramsey’s characterizations and the writing. The stakes feel more palpable now that their connection is more fleshed out. You can see it almost entirely mirrors Joel’s relationship with his late daughter, which makes his relationship with Ellie all the more bittersweet, if that makes sense. I also like the direction of moral ambiguity they’re taking with Joel, as well.
Conversely, I agree that Lynskey’s performance didn’t really work for me. She wasn’t necessarily bad at all and she did have great moments in her own right, but I didn’t really find her compelling as an intimidating, authoritative revolutionary. I think the promo for next week’s episode looked more promising for her, so maybe she’ll grow on me, especially since it looks like she’s have more to chew on.

As a massive Lord of the Rings fan, I always love the dynamic of two characters simply travelling from A to B. Lynskey wasn’t good, but that didn’t really impact my view on the episode overall. I’m not liking the score so far though – it’s not very imaginative and hits the emotional beats in predictable ways.
