Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon were literally everywhere this week promoting the show…

“Fuck you, my ball’s about to drop,” 😭😭😭😭 this show is pure comedy.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 17, 2021 at 3:29 am #1204465060Reviews are saying its pretty ridiculous and soapy, so I imagine going into it the season 1 fans are going to double down but those who didn’t love it then definitely aren’t going to now.

She is being praised in the reviews and many highlight it’s her best work.

Yeah I haven’t seen a review yet that’s had a problem with Aniston.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 17, 2021 at 5:22 am #1204465152The premiere was pretty good, it felt more like a transition between season 1 and when the storylines of s2 will actually kick in. The cast remains the highlight and I enjoyed Reese more than in most of s1 (blonde hair, its power).
Critics agreeing that the season is more soapy and full of twists is making me more excited for the rest. The show has always been messy and no one is watching it for its sharp writing, so the fact that it’s apparently embrassing its soapiness is a good thing for me.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 17, 2021 at 5:59 am #1204465197There remains two reasons to watch this show: Jennifer Anniston and Billy Crudup.
I will say, that hour went by pretty quickly and the show remains rapidly entertaining. I’m happy to have a fun, somewhat mindless hour of tv each week, but I don’t want it to be anything else, PARTICULARLY not a reflection of the times. That sneeze at the end felt somewhat tasteless (this show’s complete and total lack of nuance lol). Like, covid isn’t recent history, it’s the current moment, and also this show has shown it doesn’t have the depth or maturity to make much of a point of the current environment. Fun melodrama is fine, but I’d prefer that melodrama not be set against the backdrop of a catastrophic pandemic. Kinda takes the “fun” out of it.
Like I said, Anniston and Crudup are still great, and if there’s one thing the writers deserve credit for it’s crafting those characters. To contrast, I still don’t know what the fuck Reese is doing and who Bradley Jackson is. It’s not Reese’s fault, the character is just so inconsistently and thinly written that at this point I’m just bored with her plots and miss whenever Anniston (or one of the supporting characters) isn’t on screen.
I’m in for the season, but this show needs to tread lightly.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 17, 2021 at 6:27 am #1204465236I like that they’re addressing Covid. At some point we’re all just gonna have to start accepting it’s part of life now and so even escapism shouldn’t be allowed to bury its head in the sand.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 17, 2021 at 7:10 am #1204465298I would get it if they were setting it in the second half of 2020, and showed the Morning Show getting their rapid tests, wearing masks on set, etc. But to be reliving the Spring of 2020, a truly traumatic and scary time (particularly for New York which the show seems to claim as part of its identity)- I mean we’ll see, but that doesn’t match the tone of “escapism” at all.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 17, 2021 at 7:25 am #1204465330This season is already out? Apple has done a bad job of promoting it. All I can hear about is Sex Education. A shame
Yep. Today. Apple embargoed this after the S1 critical fiasco.

What reviews from critics have you found?

If the show didn’t meet the current moment in this PANDEMIC time period (2020 NYC), it would be lambasted for being a shortsighted fairytale. Let’s see how the show actually handles covid this season before railing against it for not being escapism enough.

This simply isn’t true lol most shows airing right now aren’t integrating covid, several of which are set in New York.

I said “we’ll see” and that I was concerned, wasn’t fully railing against it.

I found multiples on twitter. Reviews from Variety, EW and The Daily Beast particularly have highlighted the soapy and twisty elements (Variety negatively while the other two enjoyed it).
Reviews are starting to be added on RT, it starts with 80% (s1 is at 61% and I’m pretty sure it started rotten?)

I’m going to be blunt here: Reese’s Bradley is supposed to be about 15 years (I believe they indicate at some point she’s 8 or 10 years out of college) younger than Reese and it does not work. I don’t believe Reese playing early 30s when she’s 46 and playing against Jen who is 5 or 6 years older and a much more age appropriate, world-weary character.
