I wish that Susan Kelechi Watson got nominated last year over some of the actual nominees because she was very deserving and would have made a worthy winner.
This year it sucked because Susan did not have a lot to do.
ReplyCopy URLJune 5, 2020 at 7:40 am #1203517373Just noticed Season 4 has finally been added to Prime Video in the UK. Haven’t seen this season yet, my weekend is sorted.
ReplyCopy URLJune 22, 2020 at 11:57 am #1203546329I am so not ready for the inevitability of Rebecca dying.
Just finished Season 4 and every year I worry I won’t love it as much as the last, but my god I never need to worry.
It is borderline shameful the lack of love Mandy Moore in particular has gotten for this role. She delivers so much and manages to somehow be believable at every age she plays.
Sterling K Brown should be in the conversation to WIN Best Actor again, too. He was phenomenal. I love Randall & Rebecca’s dynamic.
Justin Hartley had probably his best season yet. He could have won Supporting Actor but I understand with his screen presence this year he’s going lead.
Susan Kelechi Watson has been an MVP for the last two years, so I get that in an ensemble show like This Is Us you can’t give everyone the same kind of attention every single year (especially when you have a clear plan of action as this does).
Griffin Dunne was great as Uncle Nicky – WHO THE HELL DOES HE MARRY? His scene in the car on Thanksgiving when he breaks down was so moving. He could be the real surprise come Emmy Noms?
Also is it time to acknowledge the great young performers in this cast? Lyric Ross has always been great, but this year the young Big Three have all been amazing.
In terms of Guest Performers, Jennifer Morrison stood out most amongst the newest cast members.
In a just world it will receive:
BEST DRAMA SERIES
BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (Sterling K Brown)
BEST LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (Justin Hartley)
BEST LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES (Mandy Moore)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (Griffin Dunne)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (Niles Fitch)
BEST WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES (Light & Shadows)
BEST WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES (The Cabin)
BEST DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES (The Cabin)
BEST GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (Ron Cephas Jones)
BEST GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (Gerald McRaney)
BEST GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES (Rachel Hilson)
BEST GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES (Jennifer Morisson)
BEST GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES (Phylicia Rashad)I may slightly-just-about adore this show.

I think she’s definitely getting in. I don’t know why people still underestimate especially when she finally got in last year.
Because the vast majority of people here don’t watch This Is Us and keep underestimating it, then act surprised when it “overperforms”.

I don’t think they would do that… no.

Sure, maybe This is Us will do well in nominations next month. Sometimes there are random surprises we can’t foresee. But those of us “underestimating” it aren’t doing it because we have some vendetta against the show, but because the facts point that way. Mandy missed for season 2 when her showcase episode followed the Superbowl and was probably the most popular television episode of the year. Everyone was predicting her to get in that time. Then, she gets in a year later in a field of seven with most of the competition gone. Now, the show misses SAG. It’s not biased for most of us to be skeptical about her getting in, I’m sure she’s still great, but her buzz this year is not comparable with that of Super Bowl Sunday. And it’s not like people are a year behind on the show like Schitts Creek or Better Call Saul, because Hulu posts the episodes right after.

All of this. People here pretend like Mandy is some perennial nominee/TV academy favorite. She’s been nominated once. Her performance in 2018 was nothing short of brilliant and she still missed. So, it can happen again.

But Moore getting in wouldn’t be a “random surprise” though. She is now and forever an Emmy nominee, so that affords her a level of entryway into “the club” in a way that others don’t have, like Zendaya for example. Not that I think she’ll be anywhere near a contender, but like Moore, Zendaya has also had to face some eye-rolling biases from people regarding her musical teeny-bopper phase in comparison to her “serious” actressing transition. It’s complete bullshit in both regards really, like people just want to pigeonhole and typecast performers forever as one thing only when that goes against the very definition of “acting.” And in Moore’s case, what more does she have to do? She’s utterly brilliant on this show and has been for four seasons running. You would know that if you actually watched “This Is Us,” but I know that’s half the battle on this web site. Regardless, Moore is firmly in my Lead Actress Drama predictions and have never left them. It’ll be no “random surprise” when she’s nodded again next month.

Oh but I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just that most people here don’t watch it so they tend to not predict it over their fav, which is not something I criticize because we all do that in some degrees. But it’s why This Is Us as whole is always being underestimated in this forum because not much are watching it. I feel like people have been predicting Ventimiglia to miss every year and it has yet to happen.
ReplyCopy URLJune 28, 2020 at 4:36 pm #1203556084It’s definitely not unheard of for Gold Derby users to stop predicting a show when they have moved on, even if the Television Academy has not.
I remember a very similar thing happening to Downton Abbey a few years ago. It was no longer the “popular” or “cool” show, so people stopped predicting it in writing, directing, most acting slots outside of Smith, and even series. And while it did miss occasionally in certain categories, it never completely fell off like many users were predicting. Bonneville was not predicted for his noms, people had dropped Dockery even when she kept getting in, and Carter always surprised.
Last year Moore and Sullivan popped up randomly, so I don’t think it’s smart for people to think that this show could get 0 major nominations on the morning. Realistically, I think some/most of the Lead/Supporting actors could be back again and the show could pop into Drama series.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 31, 2020 at 12:34 am #1203617752I guess I watched another show this season, considering how bad This Is Us did this winter at Globes/SAG, and now with Emmys And Golderby TV Awards.
Season 4 was great, as good as previous seasons (if not better), with particular stunning work by Sterling K. Brown, Mandy Moore and Justin Hartley.
Whoever watched the show knows what I’m talking about.
