Beth, as a character, won this episode for me. Rachel Hilson is bringing a lot to the table for what amounts to a bunch of small moments as young Beth, and Susan Kelechi Watson probably had the standout moment of the week in her monologue to Randall and Tess. I actually agree this was the best episode of the season so far. The dinner with the teenage big 3 and their respective partners was the best storyline and gave Mandy Moore plenty to do. I’m starting to see how Miguel fits into Rebecca’s life post-Jack. Although it is so far removed from the other stories, Kevin’s journey so far with Cassidy and Nicky has been great, though I hope it doesn’t veer into the obvious love triangle subplot that was seemingly set up here. Chrissy Metz didn’t have much to do, but I am excited about the storyline with her boyfriend in the past. I’ve seen some people online comment that he might have been abusive, but I have a feeling he is an addict. He looks sickly and unshaven, and the show has already covered domestic abuse with Jack’s parents so this is the next frontier of totally depressing shit for them to cover. Regardless, I like Austin Abrams so I’m excited to see how that unfolds. This season so far has actually been a rebound from season three, though it’s still far from its former glory just yet. But there is time.

Milo can direct! Good effort from him in showcasing the ensemble above all else and not trying to reinvent the wheel. We can’t all be multi-hyphenates like Emmy winner Jason Bateman, after all lol. It was nice getting Ron Cephas Jones back. I don’t mind seeing William continue to pop up season after season in small doses. I loved his scene opposite Susan Kelechi Watson. The seltzer scene with Randall and Tess was another standout. Miss Mandy Moore continues to do more and more to cement a consecutive lead actress Drama Emmy nomination next year. Pretty devastating scene with Miguel in the kitchen where she thinks her family is “too broken” post-Jack’s death. And berating her ungrateful kids was icing on the cake. Loved Justin Hartley’s scenes opposite Griffin Dunne like I always do. Just not impressed with Jennifer Morrison at all. Like, a tired love triangle? No, don’t do that, please. Very intrigued with the mystery behind teen Kate’s boyfriend that “alters the course of her life forever.” I immediately thought either rape or domestic abuse. Drug addict is a possibility, but I took that to mean that another traumatic event for Kate takes place to lead her to snowballing in eating.

Overdose? That’s where my mind went almost immediately after the episode ended.

Totally disagree, this season and season 3 have been the best ones of the show, during the first two seasons half of the stories never really worked and many characters were unbearable, especially Kate and Toby, many times Kevin too. In season 3 they found a new balance and now all storylines and all the characters work.

This was a very good episode.

I know that some people like to crap on This Is Us, but this season is proving that they would deserve another Outstanding Drama Series nomination.

    I totally agree.
Season 3 is so underrated. It had some lows (the notorious Waiting Room episode) but also lot of series highs, especially the Vietnam arc and Beth story. And from the season 3 finaly I knew season 4 would have been great.
Is there anything Milo Ventimiglia can’t do? Great direction from him, with all those storyline/timelines/characters. It worked perfectly and in a natural way.
Mandy Moore and Susan Kelechi Watson killed in their scenes.
I know buzz for this show is gone but it should make a comeback at all this winter awards. It’s the best drama out there at the moment, just after Succession.

They hit the golfing storyline with Randall hard, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. It reminded me of Beth’s sudden love of ballet that came out of nowhere. The storylines have to start somewhere, but still. I bought into Jack’s issues with the country club b/c of Rebecca’s classist father, but Randall was never denied entry into the golf club due to his race. He just sucked at playing golf lol! Interested in seeing what clashes are in store for Jack and Rebecca with Randall’s new teacher, and for that matter, when Randall and Beth meet Deja’s new guy and parents. Kevin and Cassidy, meh. Here for none of that shit. I was slightly enthused about the gym redhead girl lol. Anything’s better than Zoe though, so silver linings. I’d love to see Kevin and Nicky go on an RV trip together instead. Kate and Toby’s scenes were just okay. More compelling material would be the trials and tribulations with Baby Jack over their dried-up sex life. No one currs.

Solid episode. Mess at Randall playing the other councilmen lmao but good for him. I missed Beth so much, I felt her absence in this one.

I liked the subject on race and how ignorant Randall’s parents can be, without realising it. I didn’t like the slight passive aggressiveness with which Jack talked to Mr Lawrence with regards to Randall and his coming to terms with what his race represents. It’s not a jab at his parenting, he should learn to be open-minded and learn something from others. Less lectures, as you said sir, and more listening and learning.

Kevin and Cassidy… ugh I hate it. I hope they realise they made a mistake and shouldn’t act on this again. Cassidy should return to her husband and the writers should leave Kevin alone for the rest of the season when it comes to relationships. Seriously this jumping into a new relationship every season will become less and less effective for us viewers. Kevin’s plot had been my absolute favorite until that damn kiss. Ugh!

Kate and Toby’s storyline started out promising with Jack but I just wasn’t as invested in the sex stuff. Let’s get back to more important issues, people.

Great work from Lonnie Chavis. Overall good episode, the end was perfect.
