Lovely episode. Justin Hartley absolutely killed it; the poor guy is so underrated. I found myself agreeing and disagreeing with both Randall and Kevin, which I guess points to good, layered writing. Mandy Moore was great as always. This show honestly knows when to turn off the sound and when to effectively use slow-mo. That entire museum scene was almost hypnotic, and I will always give this show credit for being shot and edited like a prestige cable drama.
Season 4 has been the show’s most consistent season so far in my opinion, which is why it’ll be very unfortunate when/if it misses the drama series lineup.
ReplyCopy URLThe present-day scenes were beautifully shot. Mandy Moore radiated in all of those scenes, especially the Met ones with that painting of the woman she was fixated on as a child. Randall and Kevin’s “rivalry” is a bit on the contrived side, mainly b/c we know it doesn’t last forever. But it might last for a significant amount of time for all we know, so I shouldn’t speculate anymore. The Pearsons “lost in NY” were fun. Kevin’s acting showcase scenes were good for the middle cast. That Kevin doesn’t get to really show much range, so this was good for him. Also, it was great seeing David Annable again! I wondered what happened to him after “Brothers & Sisters.” The makeup dept made him look older than he needed to be, but whatever. He would have made a great Jack BTW (nothing against Milo though).
ReplyCopy URLSeason 4 has been nothing but a streak of incredible episodes. I really feel bad for Susan Kelechi Watson, the show has done her dirty this season… she has like… one memorable episode (The Dinner and the Date) and I doubt they’ll give her something juicy in these final two episodes.
Anyways, this was another incredible episode. Justin Hartley, Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown are really shining this season. Milo is ever-present, of course, but without the dramatic material. I still think he has a great shot of being nominated since he’s all over these episodes anyways. And the next one has the potential of being his (& Cephas Jones and Brown’s third! tape) so I hope they treat him well.
Next week can really be either bad or a historic episode of the show. I hope they don’t drop the ball!
ReplyCopy URL“After The Fire” has instantly become one of my personal favorite episodes. What a stunning episode! Milo Ventimiglia has a great tape with this one… but dammnit Sterling K. Brown just had to outshine him like that in the last minute… mess!
The editing of this episode is some of the most beautiful work this show has ever done. The score was fantastic. Niles Fitch once again proving he’s a force to be reckoned with. I have finally decided to predict Mandy Moore, it’s just so hard to resist at this point. Sterling K. Brown should be contending to win for season 4, he’s been nothing but extraordinary. And finally Ron Cephas Jones has an episode with good screen time, his other appearance this season was just a single scene. Pamela Adlon also did her thing. And we finally get a sense of where the animosity between the brothers got worse, but they’ll have a hard time finding Kevin a fiance in one episode… good luck Daniel and crew lmao you might’ve played yourselves!
All in all… a great episode and a splendid season. One more to go!
