I submit Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which manages to somehow accomplish the extremely difficult task of capturing the absurdity and depressing comicality of Daniel Handler’s books.
The production value and aesthetic of the show are on point, it closely follows the book plotlines while seamlessly incorporating some additional touches (that end up working really well- Lemony Snicket’s on screen appearances, Jacqueline and Larry-Your-Waiter, Will Arnett & Cobie Smulders’ characters), and the performances are great.
NPH’s Count Olaf is simply iconic, the young actors who play the Baudelaires are much better than one would expect, and Kitana Turnbull’s Carmelita Spats is close to perfect.
There are also a slew of recurring and supporting performances that are done superbly well- Lucy Punch as Esme Squalor, Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket, Nathon Fillion as Jacques Snicket, Joan Cusack as Justice Strauss, Catherine O’Hara (who also plays Justice Strauss in the Jim Carrey movie adaptation!) as Dr. Orwell, K. Todd Freeman’s Mr. Poe, Alfre Woodard’s Aunt Josephine, Alison Williams’ Kit Snicket, Max Greenfield as the Denouements, Beth and Richard E Grant as the Woman With Hair But No Beard and the Man With A Beard But No Hair, and all of Olaf’s Henchpeople.
ReplyI also feel that as a massive fan of the ASOIAF book series (or whatever’s been published anyway), GOT never truly captured the scope of the universe GRRM was trying to build. I don’t begrudge the showrunners and the team behind it their great success in pulling it off to the extent that they did (for seasons 1-4), but for me it will always be an entirely separate entity from the books. It was a great drama at the start (and went careening off a cliff at the end) though.

I know right? I was a big fan of the books as a kid, and I’ve never come across an adaptation that so accurately translates the tone and vibe of the source to the screen. I heard they’re planning on doing the prequel book too, as the show was received really well.
ReplyCopy URLOlive Kitteridge didn’t just do the novel justice; it surpassed it by basically taking a collection of vignettes, some of which Olive was the main focus, and others in which she was barely mentioned, and turned it into a magnificent, cohesive, 4-hour narrative that deserved every Emmy win it got.
How on Earth Tom O’Neil thought it was too boring to win the Emmy astounds me. Tom, your taste is just baffling at times. What on Earth were you thinking, Tom, by predicting American Horror Story: Freak Show would win?

I actually hated the HBO adaptation. It takes some next level talent to turn Pullman’s brilliant novels this lifeless and dull, stripped away of all complexity and depth.

I enjoyed it for what it was lol, I always figured it would be difficult to pull off the surrealism and lore of the books. Infinitely superior to the Nicole Kidman movie. And I really liked the craft and performances.

The Expanse has a special place in my heart. I think it‘s the best Science Fiction Series out there right now and with Amazon taking over it also gets the right amount of budget to make it also look like the best Science Fiction in television.

I didn‘t even finish the first season. Not because I thought it is bad or something, but I just forgot about it.
