Hopefully he improves as the show progresses because from what I’ve seen so far Domnhnall is outacting him.
Honey they are both strong and deserving of noms, but i think Steve has the edge for me, the latter half is all about him and less about Gleeson’s character.

I think this is likely my fault, I kept track of all the mid-year lists but the system I used is very different from what Metacritic uses, where really 1st and 2nd place are much, much more important. Severance is still doing well, I think the issue is mostly that while people like it and it’s a show that likely every critic has seen, a lot of people just don’t want to put it at number 1 or number 2.
Maybe it’s also because the competition has just been so stiff this year. I love Severance, I’d say it’s one of my favourite seasons of television ever, but even for me it’s only sitting at 5th place (4th place excluding Station Eleven, which many publications are doing this year.). Better Call Saul has been on a few less lists I think, but when it shows up it’s always taking 1st and 2nd place, while Severance hasn’t garnered that level of passion (probably because the structure of Better Call Saul was very creative, and it’s the end of a 6 season run that’s been beloved by critics every single year). I think The Bear is similar in that it has a huge amount of buzz and likely every critic watched it, but it’s getting 1st and 2nd placements. (And Reservation Dogs also has some critics super passionate about putting it in 1st and 2nd, although I think ultimately Severance will definitely jump over it.)

December 2, 2022 at 7:42 pm #1205176405Not your fault at all!! I read most of the “so far” lists and Severance seemed to do way better on those. (A lot of them were like, last month too).
I totally get it about BCS, and I know some newer shows have more buzz now. I guess I’m just surprised by some finishes outside the top ten, and it being left off some lists altogether!

ReplyCopy URLDecember 2, 2022 at 8:21 pm #1205176417Yeah that’s a good point, it did really well with critics throughout the year. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me as well, but every show that’s beating Severance came out after most of the so far lists were published (except better Call saul, but it’s 2nd half did much better with critics.) I did think it would do better, but it’s still early yet, it definitely has time to catch up! And 5th place is still nothing to sneeze at.

Really blown away by Andor’s runaway success, and even more blown away that I’m happy it’s doing so well. I’m also happy to see OFMD, it really meant a lot to me

Finished binging Andor earlier this week and I saw mentions on the tl about how good it was but it still far exceeded my expectations! It’s a staggering achievement of masterful writing working in complete synchronicity with production design and music, direction and many other aspects. Truly hope Gilroy and his team are recognised – it’s a show that isn’t cynical and is genuinely interested in exploring human nature with fantastic set pieces. I love shows that make the right decision at every turn.
OFMD is super special to me too. So few shows that explore the older queer psyche and are about people falling in love later in life. Production values excellent on that one too.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 2, 2022 at 9:17 pm #1205176440I’ve felt so blessed this year with shows like OFMD and Heartstopper, these are the kinds of gay romances I’ve wanted to see on TV since I was a kid. Plus stuff like IWTV, This is Going to Hurt and Severance, there was such a spectrum of queer male relationships on TV this year.
I’m not quite as fond of Andor as everyone else, it didn’t quite crack my top ten, but I still really loved it, which honestly just speaks to the sheer volume of TV this year. I think sci fi is best when it tells us things about the world we currently live in. I never really thought we’d get a really amazing Star Wars project, so I’m pretty happy with that too. Couldn’t be happier to see it doing so well

It’s still doing pretty well, though. A cynical take is a lot of critics want to be special and not pick the obvious frontrunner. Hence it still being on every list but not #1 or #2 a lot so far. It also aired n the first quarter of the year so maybe some people just have been too far removed from it to remember how much they enjoyed it when they watched the first time.
I tend to lean on the cynical side of things most of the time but it’s also possible some of these critics just liked other shows more.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 3, 2022 at 10:20 am #1205176847So far the overall aggregate consists of shows that would all be in my personal top 10 or shows I haven’t watched. Some of those shows I likely will never watch because of the genre (Andor) or universe fatigue (House of Dragon) and some I just didn’t know existed because of football season (Bad Sisters) and am looking forward to checking out now.

I think this is honestly spot on, although I think Severance and Better Call Saul are both frontrunners, but weirdly (considering it’s a prequel to one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows ever) I feel like Better Call Saul feels like more of an artsy/underground/underdog pick for a lot of critics. And yeah, it is still doing REALLY well. I think this year is just crazy competitive, there isn’t a single clunker in the top 15
And yeah, that’s what I enjoy the most about this is getting to catch up on shows I missed!
