Better Call Saul has the narrative of be continuously overlooked and underappreciated by awards bodies, specifically the Emmys, which definitely plays into the underdog narrative. It wouldn’t be my #1 or #2 even but I also have no problem with people picking it that high either. It was a great season of TV.
ReplyCopy URLIt’s still doing pretty well, though. A cynical take is a lot of critics want to be special and not pick the obvious frontrunner. Hence it still being on every list but not #1 or #2 a lot so far. It also aired n the first quarter of the year so maybe some people just have been too far removed from it to remember how much they enjoyed it when they watched the first time. I tend to lean on the cynical side of things most of the time but it’s also possible some of these critics just liked other shows more.
This is the thought I had, interesting to hear others say it as well! It almost seems like putting Severance at #1 would’ve been “cool” six months ago but now it’s just the “boring”, obvious choice.
ReplyCopy URLSo far the overall aggregate consists of shows that would all be in my personal top 10 or shows I haven’t watched. Some of those shows I likely will never watch because of the genre (Andor) or universe fatigue (House of Dragon) and some I just didn’t know existed because of football season (Bad Sisters) and am looking forward to checking out now.
That’s what I thought too and I have zero knowledge about SW! But it turned out to be other types of genres: spy thriller in the vein of Tinker Tailor, heist movie, commentary on prison and institutions, anti-fascist rebellion… all in one! Hope you give it a chance.

The critics work really hard putting together their lists and reviews, they deserve credit for them (especially considering Finno Expert even replaced Lorraine Ali’s name)

I’m not sure if they just haven’t posted those yet, or if they’ve moved away from that system after the massive lay offs earlier this year. Based on some of the blurbs, they talk as though they discussed the list placements as a group, and I have a feeling a ballot system would produce a different number 1 pick.)
