ReplyCopy URLDecember 5, 2022 at 9:53 am #1205178959There has been a deluge of lists today and none of the following count for metacritic (I think Huff Post also doesn’t count but I didn’t realize that until now) so I’m just going to post the links instead of writing them out:

Interesting how strong House of the Dragon has started off in spite of its initial reviews being quite mediocre.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 5, 2022 at 10:16 am #1205179004Andor is really strong. House of the Dragon better than I expected considering the mixed reviews.
Some surprising or curious omissions: Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, The Good Fight, The Crown, The Lord of the Rings, What We Do in the Shadows, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Euphoria, Stranger Things, The White Lotus.
It didn’t make the list (yet), but Ms. Marvel already had three mentions in the Top 10 lists considered by Metacritic.

December 5, 2022 at 10:20 am #1205179015If they had counted all of the ballot submissions for Polygon like they’ve done in the past for The AV Club, Andor would be even higher
ReplyCopy URLDecember 5, 2022 at 11:03 am #1205179074Some surprising or curious omissions: Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, The Good Fight, The Crown, The Lord of the Rings, What We Do in the Shadows, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Euphoria, Stranger Things, The White Lotus.
The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Stranger Things wouldn’t have made it here unless their seasons had incredible critical acclaim. Although all three are critically acclaimed shows none of them have ever really been shoes critics have been overly passionate about (outside of The Crown’s 4th season which the TCA didn’t even nominate for programme of the year in such a barren field) just performing moderately on these types of critical lists and polls. Likewise although they both started off in scores in their 70s both Euphoria and The Rings of Power’s receptions turned sour by the end of their runs (with the former not even getting in at TCA this year after being embraced for its debut season) so it would have been surprising to see them here.
Hacks and Only Murders in the Building’s under-performances however are interesting. The former was steam-rolling this time last year and critics did embrace season 2 when it came out whilst the latter had a very strong performance last year. Season 2 of Only Murders had a more lukewarm reception than its first so I guess it isn’t surprising to see it under-perform so much but it’s interesting seeing how much it has dropped seeing as in some cases even The Crown and Stranger Things have been performing better than it. Hacks however is truly puzzling seeing how much acclaim it seemed to have garnered back when its finale aired in June. Did people just move on from it like with The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 in the time between? I still think it will probably find itself somewhere in the top 20 as some of the British publications will probably rank it highly as they’ll be judging it with season 1 also in mind.
The White Lotus is another interesting one although I think that’s more down to the fact this season hasn’t finished airing yet (similar thing with why Abbott Elementary has under-performed so far).

Wait why are there only like fifteen titles? Usually there’s like twice that…

They’ll add more as more lists come in, I think there’s probably a dozen or so shows tied with 3 points and they’re waiting for them to get more points so it’s not just a huge tie. I think I remember it having 15 titles when it first launched last year as well, but I could be wrong.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 5, 2022 at 2:45 pm #1205179267Seeing This is Going to Hurt as the only limited series on that list puts into sharp perspective how weak this year has been in terms of true critical breakouts for that category. Nearly half the top ten had been filled with just them the past few years for comparison.
