December 6, 2022 at 8:05 am #1205179981Love Andor having a strong showing so far – hope this translates into some recognition at a major award. I’ve been rewatching and the writing for this is so tight without sacrificing the emotional core that is Cassian and Maarva’s relationship.

(This list is done like an awards show, with the “best” show being crowned in a week or so, but metacritic still counts it as a list. I’m not sure if they go back later and give the winning show two extra points.)

I don’t know who Darren Franich is, but his picks are the worst I’ve seen and his commentary about the “worst” shows is mostly ridiculous. Wow. Can’t believe a publication like that would have him in that role.

December 6, 2022 at 11:48 am #1205180494D’Addario’s list feels like. Maybe the worst this season? At least other lists with questionable picks had stuff to make up for it. I feel like the HMs and list should be swapped. I kept scrolling down and thinking “surely it can’t get worse” and then it just… did…
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2022 at 11:53 am #1205180507D’Addario being Variety’s chief TV critic is the reason I can never trust a review from that publication. I still dislike Brian Lowry more though.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2022 at 12:01 pm #1205180543The only show on that list that’s top 10 worthy for me is Barry, but I haven’t seen a lot of them. But The Girl from Plainville and The Dropout are just not top ten worthy, especially in a year with so many good shows. And clearly he watched them since they’re all sitting in his Honourable Mentions! I don’t know how you watch Euphoria and Somebody Somewhere and decide that Euphoria is the better show

This has to be a joke.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2022 at 2:07 pm #1205180710I’m so grateful to Daniel D’Addario’s list for giving me the evidence I have always needed for when I say he is a bad critic
ReplyCopy URLDecember 6, 2022 at 2:23 pm #1205180735His reason for including And Just Like That… is more comical than the inclusion itself.
As I write this, the press has not been able to see all the episodes of Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” HBO’s drama/comedy hybrid about the vexations of lust on an island paradise. So I’ll make room for a series about love set on a similarly alluring isle: Manhattan. The first season of this “Sex and the City” reboot, the second half of which aired in early 2022, was maddening, frustrating, deeply flawed, often operatically wrongheaded. It operated, in other words, according to the logic of romance. After a very rocky start, the series found its way towards depicting its three core characters as genuine, rounded, and complete; it sketched out a social milieu for 50something women that felt sharp, smart, and inclusive; it treated the ending of a friendship with gravity and care; it gave us Che Diaz, an instantly iconic TV character. I had many, many complaints about this series. And I would watch a million more seasons.
