https://www.metacritic.com/feature/tv-critics-pick-10-best-tv-shows-of-2022 Severance has taken first place by two and a half points

Interesting! I thought BCS had it in the bag.

It really did feel like Better Call Saul was pulling away and The Bear was a legitimate threat to finish ahead of it too. Which would have been fine. I love both shows and there are arguments to be made for each but I’ve been saying since back in March or whenever this show aired this was going to be a juggernaut come Emmy and year end list season. It just had that feel to me. The 14 Emmy nominations, while great for a freshman drama series, yielded zero wins which was wildly disappointing. After their weak showing the night of the Emmys I kind of anticipated that Severance might fall in the year end rankings but was pretty shocked at how slow it started.

The whole list, though, really highlights what an awesome year of TV it has been and how hard it is going to be to top next year or any year in the future. But with new seasons of Succession, Justified, and Fargo along with new seasons of Severance, Barry, and The Bear I am hopeful.

Severance did win 2 Emmys. Obviously not the showing fans wanted, but just for the record.

Also, Our Flag Means Death, Euphoria (lol), We Own This City, The English, Derry Girls, The Dropout and Interview with the Vampire all joined the top 25.

These new additions, WWDITS, TIGTH, Heartstopper solidly in the top 20 and Severance #1

I meant ATL but that’s on me for not clarifying.

I know this has been said before but scrolling through seeing the riches in Drama and comedy this year then suddenly getting smacked in the face by the meager three limited series is wild. Especially in comparison to the last few years

Especially given just how many series there were this year and the talent attached. I think if you’d said this to us last year we’d not have believed it.

It was really the death of limited series.

Not to mention TWL’s an anthology.

I think, to be honest, the balance of the commercial/visible vs awards aspect has been off, which is also the case in the film space.

I think everyone in general only has so much room for baity stuff. Stuff like Mare (watchable, a bit broader in scope, great lead but not just going to be watched by people who are in a prestige circle, not hideously expensive production wise) is the sweet spot I suspect they’ll try and land now there seems to be a contraction of production.

#3 on WhatCulture’s list puts Pachinko into the top ten, 0.5 points ahead of HotD.

Updated, list expanded from 25 to 30, not sure which shows are new. Yesterday Severance was 3.5 points above Better Call Saul, now it’s 1.5 points. I was looking through old metacritic aggregates and this is the closest the top two has been since the start of the 10s when there were only like 20 lists total
