Andor at #2 wtf, and it’s just behind Severance.

The writing, directing and acting in Andor are outstanding. No show on television better represents the current threat of fascism which our world is facing. People on this forum are probably dismissing it because it is set in the Star Wars universe; however it is easily one of the best crafted shows of the year.

I know it’s probably great, I’m just shocked at it’s late surge
It was way behind both Severance and BCS earlier on.ReplyCopy URLFYC:

Honestly, I’m surprised Severance won. (Are we saying it won? Or is it not over?) The show came out of nowhere, from a completely unknown, first-time creator/writer (yes, I know Stiller directed but still, getting such good, resonating content from a rookie was far from a sure thing) and on a lesser-known platform. Most of all, it aired a year ago. I think recency bias is just part of human nature, so I’m not surprised to see Andor (which I also thought was excellent) or The Bear (great too!). Given it’s final-season status (and good execution) I wasn’t surprised to see BCS either. So to me, Severance coming out on top is the big surprise. 100% deserved, but still surprising to me.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 7, 2023 at 9:34 am #1205225351I was expecting Severance to win until it had a very shaky start with the aggregate. Admittedly I was pretty floored when Severance performed the best in the mid-year aggregate, for the reasons you listed, but back then there wasn’t really a clear frontrunner so any show would’ve probably surprised me.
The last few years the aggregate concluded around January 14th, so I’d say it’s over then. Normally the winner would already be clear by now, but of course the points are still pretty close.

After this I feel it’s pretty safe to say the aggregate is done, and Severance is the winner with a lead of 6.5 points over Andor (not that that’s doing much for either of them with awards, but honestly this means more to me than any award show).
I was curious about how tight this race was so I went back and looked at the gap between 1st and 2nd place; this is the tightest race since 2011, where Breaking Bad beat Homeland by 5 points. And that was mostly because there were far fewer lists in the aggregate back then.
Other years with a small gap were Killing Eve and Atlanta with in 2018 with 10 points, Twin Peaks and The Ledtovers with 14 points in 2017, and American Crime Story and Atlanta with 14.5 points in 2016 (that surprised me, I always thought ACS was the main critical pick). Kind of interesting after having three years of these enormous critical darlings demolishing the competition. I think really 2022 was just an incredible year with a lot of fantastic shows.

Wednesday is 0.5 points away from making it on the aggregate.

Thanks for all the updates and analysis. Also do think critical performance is fascinating compared to award shows with voting bodies that can be lazy.
Thrilled for Andor reaching second and hopefully more people have time to catch up with it.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2023 at 8:16 am #1205241083For me I just really like that I can actually try and understand the reasoning for why things win and do well because of the writeups, critics social media while the show is airing etc. vs the voters at any awards show. I feel like I could confidently explain why Severance won the aggregate and actually talk about choices the director and writer made and specific episodes whereas with HotD’s GG win I feel like the explanation has more to do with the culture and zeitgeist surrounding the show. Some of Severance’s win definitely does have to do with visibility and the atmosphere around it, but I generally prefer analyzing the content and form of TV shows rather than how successful their campaigning was.
Also with Andor’s great performance with the guilds, it’s interesting to see that massive critical support really can have an impact on awards.
