Every year we get a few shows in the top thirty that aren’t live-action narratives, but are instead animations, documentaries, sketches, specials, variety series, etc. Other than The Rehearsal (I’m not sure if it would fall into comedy, but from my knowledge of it, I wouldn’t think so), what else are you guys predicting?
The Last Movie Stars, Ethan Hawke’s documentary for HBO Max. I think it is probably the frontrunner to win the Emmy for that BTL category at the moment.

I think the third season of Harley Quinn was acclaimed and seen enough to show up in a lot of lists this year, not sure about top thirty tho
ReplyCopy URLNovember 3, 2022 at 7:58 pm #1205141230I think Strange New Worlds is going to end up doing a lot better than I would’ve expected, but I don’t think it’ll crack the top ten
If Strange New Worlds ended up showing up in some way at Critic’s Choice I wouldn’t be entirely surprised.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 3, 2022 at 8:13 pm #1205141243It is a live-action narrative but I forgot that Heartstopper did so well (8th place) in mid-year, which is a bit unusual for a show that’s more aimed at teens, and I definitely expect to see it in the top 30, although I think it’s going to drop a lot.
There was a bit of buzz in mid-year for Rothaniel, Jerrod Carmichael’s comedy special. I don’t think it’ll make it into the top 30, but I think it’s one of the strongest performing “non live-action narrative” things other than The Rehearsal. I feel like it’ll do similarly to Bo Burnham’s Inside, although probably not as strong as even that since Inside had a pretty big cultural moment. I saw Inside on a few lists last year but it wasn’t enough for it to place very high.
I also agree that Harley Quinn has a decent chance.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 3, 2022 at 8:32 pm #1205141260I think what gets those last few spots in the top 20/30 will be very interesting. I think Dopesick sneaking in there last year was a telling sign of how much it was growing overall.

There’s also usually a reality show that sneaks up in about 3-6 lists in the #8-#10 the past few years (Cheer; Drag Race UK; I Am Cait; Queer Eye; various Housewives and recent better seasons of Survivor & TAR). I can see something similar happening this year for either one of the Housewives shows (Salt Lake or Potomac); Big Brother; The Mole and Real World.
Married at First Sight UK showing up in the British Publications wouldn’t surprise me either, as well an acknowledge of it becoming unavoidable in public discourse a la Love Island 2017-2019.

It just barely missed the Top 30 for S2, appearing on 15 lists but the majority of which were unranked. Given how S3 has been regarded as it’sbest season so far, I don’t see any reason why it should do any worse than last time.
I wonder though, given the gutting for scrap parts of the American animation industry this year, if critics will circle around it or some other shows as important cause. Possibly the seconds seasons of Primal and UnDone.

Rothaniel is much more closer in spirit to Hannah Gadsby “Nanette” than Inside. I can see it performing better than Nanette did though, since most American publications were already familiar with Carmichael and it arguably helped turn into a celebrity figure in a way that don’t comedians just aren’t these days.

Good point! It might be a bit too niche for a year end list but there is a lot of support floating around for Pantheon on AMC+ as well.

1. Better Call Saul
2. Reservation Dogs
3. Station Eleven (I feel like it’s a big debate whether this should be in 2021 or 2022, but it wasn’t even out yet when most of the 2021 lists were dropping so I feel like putting it this year is fair)
4. The Rehearsal
5. Severance
6. Abbott Elementary
7. Hacks
8. Atlanta

The Good Fight will probably end up in my top 10 if its finale is as strong as the season has been so far (I’ve only included shows that have finished airing seasons).

It’s likely top 5 for me. Great television. I don’t know if it’s an unpopular opinion but I might prefer this show to The Good Wife in the end. I think it has been more biting and consistent than the latter.
