The way you could fill the entire category with actors who have played superheroes lol. Batman and Spider-Man are the frontrunners and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight and Vision are fighting for nominations.

Exactly. Only 2 out 7 on an American production about an American story using American accents.

Now, there are about 20 professional reviews. The show is currently sitting at a 80% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus states: “While Under the Banner of Heaven gets bogged down by an overabundance of backstory, its procedural through-line is enriched by a thoughtful introspection on personal faith.”

ReplyCopy URLApril 29, 2022 at 4:17 am #1204936738I watched them. I loved the first two episodes and completely dismiss the reviews claiming the pacing and flashbacks bogged it down or whatever. I just don’t respect their opinion on the matter.
Garfield, Howle, and Daisy-Edgar Jones are all giving inspired performances so far. And fortunately, most of the first two episodes involves at least one of them at all times.
If a reviewer went into this show expecting a murder mystery and sticking to that being the engine then it’s their own fault for not seeing what the show really is and that’s a show about something much bigger and more complicated. It’s about systems, communities, and families like this one and their prevalence in our society. How belief and faith are often exploited and politicized. It’s not supposed to be an example of all Mormons but it is an example of an aspect of Mormonhood that other Mormons want to pretend doesn’t exist. And it makes for an extremely compelling story when the lead is someone who is a true believer having that faith challenged. He can’t pretend it doesn’t exist because he has a job to do that relies on him having a strong level of objectivity.

You’re not far off from how many critics viewed it. This is an actual mixed review for the show:
