It’s the dark horse of this year, trust me.May 5, 2020 at 4:13 pm #1203465598Ha, wondered if this had its own thread already or not. Such a great show! Fingers crossed for it and for Shira Haas!
ReplyCopy URLMay 6, 2020 at 12:40 am #1203466098I didn’t think I would enjoy this but I was hooked. The performance of Shira Haas was amazing, she really astounded me. It was a demanding role and I think she really nailed it. I really enjoyed the performance of Jeff Wilbusch as well, he did a great job in his role.
I think this is something that the Globes will nominate but I really hope that the Emmys nominate this.

This show is really good, awesome to see it making waves.
ReplyCopy URLMay 29, 2020 at 11:22 am #1203507573Wow. Just watched the first two episodes last night. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but Blanchett can move over. Haas deserves every award ever for this performance. They should give her an Oscar for it just because.

August 12, 2020 at 7:01 pm #1203642892I’m on episode 2 and I’m sorry Blanchett, King and Washington but I don’t think you’re winning this year. Shira gives THE POWERHOUSE performance of the year.
Also I absolutely hate Moishe and I cannot express it enough.

August 12, 2020 at 7:31 pm #1203642935Shira is totally winning the golden globe if she gets nominated, hopefully the emmy next month, she seriously serves ACTING in such a baity role. Also, Shira seems to be the type of artist that will shine eventually, the way she efforlessly shows emotions with only face expression. TALENT!
ReplyCopy URLAugust 12, 2020 at 9:36 pm #1203643121Finished watching “Part 1.” Slow-moving, yet immersive. This world is entirely new to me, so the discovery is exciting. Shira Haas is instantly compelling. I’m very curious to see where all of this goes.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 13, 2020 at 5:48 am #1203643486Finished this. Who knew six months ago the two best performances by Leads in Limited Series would come from two unknowns in two different European productions?
I don’t think this will win Directing but the Writing and specifically the acting (I don’t want to jinx Shira’s Emmy chances by continually praising her by name) were phenomenal. It’s not winning Writing (largely because despite the writing so good nothing can overcome the once in a lifetime type of writing of Watchmen) but I really hope Shira wins. With this programme despite the writing and acting being fantastic you could differentiate the originality of the performer’s performance from the writing (which in my opinion is a good thing).
When the TV Academy awards two virtually unknown performers from European productions the two Lead categories on the Limited Series/Movie side.

August 13, 2020 at 2:52 pm #1203644369Just finished. Pretty stunning work that was so specific and intimate I felt like I shouldn’t have watched it. I have no frame of reference for the lives of New York Hasidic Jews, so that angle was fascinating and illuminating. Shira Haas was indeed incredible, and no, I wasn’t ready for the haircut scene that everyone kept talking about. That rose to the level of an Oscar clip. I definitely wanted to see more from her. I don’t think Haas is winning over King, but this Emmy nomination will catapult her career, which is its own prize. The ending was abrupt, but I’m guessing that’s where the memoir ended. I could have watched another four episodes of this, as I need to see more of Esty’s adventures. Kudos for the Netflix green-lighting something like this! I shouldn’t have waited so long to watch.
ReplyCopy URLAugust 13, 2020 at 3:09 pm #1203644389I agree with your analysis (although I’m predicting Shira for now).
What I liked specifically about the show was how it had a special feeling around it. I mean I don’t think I can give it a rating because ratings of quality weren’t at the top of my mind when watching it because I was so fascinated by the story and the character of Esty.
It’s such a shame this has to come up against Watchmen because both are deserving of pretty much every Limited/Movie award this year.
