I’d recommend Happy Valley (especially if you liked Mare of Easttown) which should be on Netflix(?) Sarah Lancashire is just one of a kind in it and her performance is one of the strongest I’ve ever seen on television.
That Olivia Colman scene from Broadchurch is some of the best acting I have ever seen! I never even watched the show, but her saying “He was 11!” haunts me to this day.
She was PHENOMENAL in Broadchurch season 1. My favourite performance of hers (even more so than The Favourite and Tyranossaur).
Whilst I didn’t enjoy season 2 so much (3 was ok but not as strong as 1), that show really had consistently strong performances across its three seasons. Not only from Colman but also David Bradley, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Charlotte Rampling, David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker… At least the first two got BAFTA nominations (and Bradley got the win) but Rampling, Tennant and Whittaker were so robbed.

Even the program awards are better.July 3, 2021 at 12:29 pm #1204328300Yet they actually award performances that are more deserving than those honoured anywhere else.
Still doesn’t make up for never giving Foy the win. The Emmys will always be superior for actually awarding her.

it hurts Keeley Hawes is still not in this list. She was robbed multiple times…let’s hope next year for It’s A Sin…

Josh Charles should have taken supporting actor over Aaron Paul and one win was enough for Anna Gunn.

July 4, 2021 at 12:31 pm #1204329049I always felt Breaking Bad was a little overrated which is not saying it wasn’t excellent.
But I truly believe Better Call Saul excels over BB in writing, directing, performances , characters, and plot as a whole.

She’s just stealing the show completely. It was noticeable in Season 1 (the debate episode is one of the highlights of the show largely because of her), but it’s even more the case here, where she’s chloroforming janitors, being the little sister on a family sitcom, pretending to go crazy and shooting people, becoming a Texan drifter, taking over the entire show in a bottle episode, and summoning Christmas pterodactyls. This might be the best comedic performance I have ever seen, and there’s still way more to go.

July 4, 2021 at 3:46 pm #1204329298Thinking Barry’s Ronny/Lilly deserved directing over Fleabag 2.1 is the equivalent to thinking that 1917 deserved to win directing over Parasite. Larger technical achievement isn’t better direction, directing is about taking what’s on the page and bringing it to life with staging and setting the tone. That first episode of Fleabag (the whole series really) has an incredibly specific tone that walks a fine line on absurdist and grounded while also switching between laugh out loud moments and heartbreaking revelations. Barry’s Ronny/Lilly is a great episode, but Fleabag will always deserve that win.

July 4, 2021 at 4:48 pm #1204329397Chile 💀 I definitely get the overall sentiment, but the comparison between the direction of Fleabag/Parasite and the direction of ‘ronny/lily’/1917 is off.

July 4, 2021 at 4:51 pm #1204329407Season 5 is the only season of Game of Thrones in which Lena Headey is the MVP of the cast.
Season 1: Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sean Bean, and Maisie Williams are all better than her.
Season 2: Peter Dinklage and Alfie Allen are both better than her.
Season 3: Most of the main cast is better than her, she didn’t have much to do in this season. Even in her own category, Natalie Dormer, Rose Leslie, Sophie Turner, Emilia Clarke, Michelle Fairley, and Maisie Williams are all better than her.
Season 4: Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, Charles Dance, and Pedro Pascal are all better than her.
Season 5: She’s the best.
Season 6: Liam Cunningham and Sophie Turner are both better than her.
Season 7: Maisie Williams is better than her.
Season 8: Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, and Alfie Allen are the only 4 people who gave notable performances this season.
