I know this category rarely changes once voters determined their favorite. I really like Last Week Tonight, but I think there are worthy successors that deserve a chance.
Daily Show: Trevor Noah has really come into his own during the Covid19 crisis. You can hear his comedic voice from Behind the Scenes finally translating better throughout the entire show.
Patriot Act: It’s really underestimated how compelling and interesting he is as an orator. He and John Oliver do similar things, but his perspective makes him just as an interesting person to watch. His material has been more interesting and varied than John Oliver.
Desus and Mero: A breath of fresh air. It shows the other guys how to create a show that’s not stuffy and a lot of fun. No manufactured bits or games that were tired back before Johny Carson retired. Just two hilarious and entertaining men having fun. They’re also great interviewers, they bring a whole new vibe on how to interview celebrities. Watch their interviews with Bill Hader and John Mulaney.
Seth Meyers: An underdog in Late Night always in the ratings shadow of Jimmy Fallon. However he remains far ahead in quality. A closer look is a consistent viral and public success, more than Last Week Tonight in recent months. Also, he stands apart by giving a platform to his writers to be at the center, operating somewhat like an ensemble. Amber Ruffin’s recent monologues have solidified my admiration for the show.
Colbert, Kimmel, and Corden have been on autopilot. I think there should be some new blood in this category.
ReplyTrevor Noah is safer than Jimmy Kimmel, seeing as Noah was one of only three talk shows nominated at PGA and Kimmel was not nominated by any of the guilds. Stephen Colbert is the only other than John Oliver that was nominated by the three above-the-line guilds, including DGA, which only nominated three talk shows like PGA. Kimmel has actually been on thin ice for years. He was not nominated by any guilds last year either and his only Emmy nomination last year was for series. He has also been missing Critics’ Choice and TCA. That Seth Meyers and Hasan Minhaj will probably be snubbed again is ridiculous.

Interestingly, ever since quarantine began Trevor Noah’s been the only regular late night host with a significant gain in both linear TV ratings, YouTube views & YouTube subscribers

John Krasinki’s “Some Good News” is entering the Emmys race. It was immensely popular a few months ago and has a good chance of nomination.
I don’t think it’ll win. National dialogue has moved past escapism and moved into dealing with social justice and BLM head on. Having those uncomfortable conversations. Even less political shows like Jimmy Fallon and James Corden have been engaging these conversations. It might seem tone-deaf to award an optimistic show during this time.
I’m team Trevor Noah, he has been killing it recently.
ReplyCopy URLNo one has really been able to touch Jon Oliver in terms of quality – he really is on another level so I’m not surprised that he keeps steam rolling.
That said, would love to see increased visibility for Noah in the nominations. I wonder if Daily Show has any online-based programming that could be eligible? I feel like the savvy/thirsty shows (i.e. Corden) always manage to pad their nom count by submitting absolutely any content they have on the shelves.

They are just submitting Between the Scenes again. It won variety short in 2017, was nominated in 2018, then was snubbed in nonfiction short last year when they reconfigured the categories.
