So it seems like she came to realize In the park that mankind is worth helping
I could be wrong but I don’t think she changed her mind in the park. Dolores still hated humanity but only when she got out and saw the real world she realized humans needed to be freed as much as the hosts. That’s when and why she chose Caleb as the leader of the revolution based on her memory of him in the park. His redeeming quality was that he could choose things freely. He made a choice at odds with his program in the park by going against the rest of the group and by getting the others to follow. She knew that with the right person to lead humanity could save itself and start over.

I mean seriously, this guy gives a win-worthy season 2 performance, and then you have him spend 8 episodes doing…what exactly? Chasing after Dolores with Stubbs (pointless character)? And there was that whole half human half host thing used in the season premiere that was seriously such a non-factor…I don’t get it. Maeve was also kind of purpose-less, but at least she propelled the plot?
Amongst all three seasons of this show, there is only one character the writers have actually utilized properly, and thats Dolores, and now she’s gone, so.
EDIT: also!!!! Caleb couldn’t have been doing those military trials more than a decade ago. Why the hell was Dolores in that park at the time then? There’s literally no reason for her to be out of Westworld for some military training. Makes zero sense. She could’ve just said she came across his data in the WW server of something.
ReplyCopy URL- yeah but that army simulation Park where Caleb saved Dolores happened before she broke out of westworld so she already saw those redeeming qualities. And in those parts where she discussed that she wanted to save humanity there was a flashback to a little girl with Dolores in the park. So she already experienced these things but wanted mankind to end at season 2. I don’t see anything humanity did in season 3 save for Caleb saving her in episode 1 that would change her mind
Those flashbacks is just her explaining why she later chose to see the beauty even in a place as ugly as Westworld where she was abused and raped so many times. Not when she actually decided to free humanity. In most of them she hadn’t even reached true consciousness. She didn’t know that humans needed to be freed or redeemed and that they are controlled just like the hosts. Even when she achieves true consciousness in the second season those few acts of kindness just aren’t enough to make her hate them less or care for them after decades of death, rape and torture. Years and years of trauma aren’t erased so easily and so fast.
When Dolores arrives in the human world she realizes that with Rehoboam controlling everything it’s actually quite similar to the park. Humans can be boiled down to simple algorithms. That’s when she puts all the pieces of the puzzle together and starts changing her mind. She then chooses Caleb as the leader because he is very much like her, he is “awake” and has free will despite being controlled. Their further interaction only solidifies her decision to save humans.

ReplyCopy URLIt is really a shame because even with flaws, season 2 was very entertaining and had little gems like The Riddle of the Sphinx and Kiksuya with great direction. The season had a great narrative, with highs ( and lows. It had an epic (and a little messy) conclusion with “The Passenger”, so I know Joy and Nolan is capable of more even with the writing flaws. Wood, Newton, Harris and Wright gave great performances in season 2, with emphasis in the lead actors because they did dirty with them this season.
HBO asking for a more simple season really made the showrunners don’t having any good arc or plan for season 3? I hope the show gets better, I still believe in them. I enjoyed some episodes, scenes and moments of the show this year, so please, fix this.
ReplyCopy URLFor all of the reassurance Nolan/Joy gave us regarding their carefully planned story, this season felt very messy and unfocused. They should’ve tried to reinvent the show, and established the ‘outside world’ more deliberately and slowly. I think that the philosophical exploration could’ve been more creative as well – as the embodiment of that, Caleb just wasn’t that interesting. People are definitely being overly critical of the show, but I think it’s because everyone saw the potential for greatness season 1 (and a lot of 2 in my opinion) displayed.

Wow, I’m not sure I’ve seen an episode written as bad as this season finale was in a long time.
Most of the lines sounded so ludicrous that I was feeling for the actors, having to be serious with that material.
Ed Harris is a pro’s pro so he does his job, but please free him from this shit show, I can’t bear watching him stand himself so low.This season was never great (whereas Season 2 had some very good highs and Season 1 was mostly highs) but these last 2 episodes were a real slap in the face.

I really can’t imagine the show getting any traction at the Emmys at this point.
Then again we live in a world where Game of Thrones Season 8, one of the worst final seasons of all time, was considered the best drama series of an entire season, so what do I know.Wow, I’m not sure I’ve seen an episode written as bad as this season finale was in a long time. I went into this episode with high expectations because Denise The & Jonathan Nolan, the writers of this episode, also wrote one of my favorite episodes of any television show ever- return 0, the Person of Interest finale. But oh boy was this episode written poorly. Makes you wonder what went wrong, because you know these writers can do so much better.
That being said, I’m still glad Denise The joined the writing team of Westworld and I hope she comes back next season as well.She’s written some of the best Person of Interest episodes, and ironically also wrote, what, imo, is the best episode of Westworld this season- The Absence of Field.

Joy, Nolan… do you see what happens when you give Mr Wright what he deserves? He DESTROYS it! He was absent for quite some time before his first and second appearance but his scenes were quite impactful. The scene with Gina Torres was the best acted scene of the episode. He should be submitted in Supporting and I think he has an excellent tape to show for it.
This should be winning Music Composition in a heart beat. There is no competition honestly. The ending definitely secured my return for the next season. I neeeeeeed it now!
Overall, this was a fine season. I think they should submit “The Winter Line” for Writing and “Crisis Theory” for Directing. Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Aaron Paul, Thandie Newton and Tessa Thompson would all make great Emmy nominees. Crossing my fingers that this season does well and returns to Drama Series.

The unnecessary overreactions. Westworld is a very prestigious show on freakin’ HBO which received great commercial success and industry acclaim. Ed Harris has received multiple Emmy nominations for being a part of it and I bet a shitload of money. Who the hell are you to tell him he’s “standing himself so low” by being in one of the most high profile shows of the past decade? The pretentiousness in this forum is so tiring sometimes. Like… I have to fucking laugh!
