I know we talk all the time how the Emmys should change, so here’s a thread to discuss it further before all hell breaks loose as we get into Emmy season.
My biggest hope is that we’ll go back to six nominees. I get the reasoning behind the idea, but I’m just not a fan. At the very least, we should’ve done this last year because of the pandemic and the weaker field of contenders. My thinking is, I’d rather have snubs like Carrie Coon for The Leftovers than filling a category of eight just for the sake of it.
Since we’re on the topic, the unlimited choice on the ballot is also not ideal.
ReplyApril 2, 2022 at 10:49 am #1204894344A re-think on guest eligibility. I think they probably should look at a time on screen rule similar to there being a 5% rule in limited for Supporting eligibility. This would also stop some of those “select down the line” supporting noms which would need to move to guest.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2022 at 11:00 am #1204894359The unlimited ballot has got to go. I understand the reasoning for it with the medium that television is but it just stops deserving standout performances from shows that lack in visibility from getting nominated (i.e. Tierney in The Affair, Zimmer in UnReal) whilst the ninth billed performer on the series frontrunner gets in for essentially having a total of half an hour to 45 minutes of screen time in a season. The Oscars are flawed in many different ways (and I’m not recommending that the television academy replicates their voting mechanism completely by any means) but at least with the restricted ballot they use in their voting process we’re able to see under-seen passion picks like Penelope Cruz and Drive My Car turn up.
I also think in this post DVD screener era of FYC campaigning the television academy needs to find a way to make the viewing of series (especially those not on Netflix and HBO Max) more accessible to voters. I appreciate that the pandemic hasn’t exactly helped with these matters due to there being an absence of in person screenings but without a proper screening mechanism in place to replace the DVD screeners lots of excellent shows risk getting drowned out if they don’t have built in visibility or haven’t gotten in at a televised winter award ceremony. I doubt A Very English Scandal and Godless would have been able to perform as well as they did at the Emmys in spite of under-performing at the guilds had the DVD screening mechanism not been in place.

I think it comes from a focus on nomination totals. The number of actors who are competitive from below about sixth billed is minimal. There are a few exceptions, but they’re mostly about them being rare break-out newcomers or them being woefully underbilled in the first place

I’d like to see shortlisted guest categories by a jury like the BAFTAs do in order to avoid name-checks and cameos. Ideally, they would ban SNL hosts from being eligible, as well.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2022 at 12:19 pm #1204894435On subject of re-thinking Guest, I think that performers whom fail to qualify for the 5% screentime in the Limited/Movie categories should be allowed to compete as Guest performers. Never thought this until Jessica Lange was nominated for AHS Apocalypse, whom wasn’t eligible when the season was competing in Limited before moving to drama.
Her inclusion there is one of the best in the category from the past few years (imo) and allowing Limited Series’ could allow for performers such as NPH (It’s a Sin) and Molly Shannon (The White Lotus) whom have excellent material (certainly more than let’s say Don Cheadle, Margo Martindale) but aren’t competitive in their Limited supporting categories due to screentime and more prominent internal co-stars.

April 2, 2022 at 12:36 pm #1204894466Having two categories Guest Actor and Guest Actress in a Series seems reasonable to me. It would make limited series performances eligible.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2022 at 12:41 pm #1204894480I think the genre demarcation should exist. I can see voters always going with just drama contenders there instead. True comedy performances already struggle in guest because of SNL.

I couldn’t have said it better, they need to get rid of the unlimited ballot. If voters can only vote for five nominees even if the category will end up with 8 contenders, then I believe we will go back to some inspiring picks. I think we are in era of high quality television that it is insane for one show to get 4 nominations in a single category when there are numerous other contenders with far much better performances.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2022 at 2:08 pm #1204894542I was wondering.. are non English tv shows not up to consideration?
Yes and no. Depends on where they studios want to submit them (Primetime or International Emmys).
Squid Game and Unorthodox are both being considered for the Primetime Emmys, whereas the same studio (Netflix) made the decision to put Lupin in consideration for the International Emmys. Sometimes it’s also a case of whether of production company behind a show as enough American money behind to be considered.
ReplyCopy URLApril 3, 2022 at 3:00 pm #1204898435Kill the unlimited ballot. Honestly switching to Oscar-esque preferential balloting as an experinment would be interesting.
At this point it’s clear Guest categories should be juried.
ReplyCopy URLApril 3, 2022 at 3:42 pm #1204898934And number of Guest submissions are fairly low so it wouldn’t be impossible for a jury per category to decipher

April 3, 2022 at 4:10 pm #1204899528We can just get voters to come up with prelimenary list of like 15-20 names in Guest and have different juries for all of them.
Also we don’t need the Short Form Acting categories honestly, we could replace them with:
A. Genderless Variety Performance Category
B. Genderless Performance in a TV Movie (since they are so irrelevant by this point)For example last year category could’ve looked like this (assuming there would be enough submissions to have like 7 slots):
Christine Baranski – Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square (Netflix)
Paul Bettany – Uncle Frank (Prime Video)
Danielle Brooks – Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia (Lifetime)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt – 7500 (Prime Video)
Andrew Scott – Oslo (HBO)
Tessa Thompson – Sylvie’s Love (Prime Video)
Ruth Wilson – Oslo (HBO)And Variety Performance category could’ve been like:

Bo Burnham – Bo Burnham: Inside (Netflix)
Daveed Diggs – Hamilton (Disney+)
Lin-Manuel Miranda – Hamilton (Disney+)

John Oliver – The Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Bowen Yang – Saturday Night Live (NBC)Why are you reporting this post? (optional):Not now
