Some thoughts:

It was a three horse Netflix/HBO/Apple (well, Tad Lasso) actors race.

No young ingenues won – all actresses were 40+ (in fact, everyone was except Peters and O’Connor)

You can 100% get nominated for genre stuff but to get over the line to win is tough (none this year)

Netflix is a bit stronger than I thought.

They’re not ready to go there with a Disney acting win yet.

Winners were still uncomfortably white. (thank goodness for Michaela).

Succession is sweeping in all categories next year. When they love a show and this show has no competition, they give it everything (see how The Crown went 7/7 + Guest Actress)

There is no more narrative play
If MJ and Conan couldn’t win, i doubt voters care that much

Next year they’ll award more black performers to look redeemable

Less “still,” more “back to being.”

Black acting wins last 7 years:

That is INCREDIBLY depressing. Wow.

Not a single POC winning any acting categories. (out of 12 categories)

Unless the voting system changes, they’re probably going to reward few shows once again.

My bet: Succession, Ted Lasso + The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and 1/2 shows in Limited Series.

Actors like to reward dramatic material. That’s why I was always so hesitant about Kathryn Hahn. Nicholson’s performance punches you right in the gut.

Well, what prevented it from winning supporting races last year?

Just because a show does well at the creative arts it doesn’t mean it’s going to win every single above the line award if other shows with lots of passion are also seen. First Fleabag winning series but losing supporting actress to MaiselSuccession winning series but both supporting categories and now The Queen’s Gambit winning series without any acting wins.

Oscars FYC:
"THE POWER OF THE DOG" – IN ALL CATEGORIES
"SPENCER" – In all categories especially Director (Pablo Larrain) and Actress (Kristen Stewart)
"SHIVA BABY" – in all categories especially Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Score
"TOGETHER" – Actress (Sharon Horgan), Actor (James McAvoy), Original Screenplay
"FLEE" – IN ALL CATEGORIES
"LAST NIGHT IN SOHO" – Director (Edgar Wright), S. Actress (Anya Taylor-Joy/Diana Rigg), Cinematography, Costume Design and Production Design
