The Flight Attendant went home from the Emmys this year with a sole win for Main Title Theme Music in spite of being a hit for HBO Max, tipped to win comedy directing and having garnered nominations for comedy series, comedy actress, comedy writing and comedy supporting actress.

However just before the show’s premiere it was in drama in the predictions centre for the winter awards and always was at risk of being moved into drama by the television academy due to the show being a 45 minute dramedy that skews more towards drama than it does comedy. So I wonder what would have happened had the academy moved The Flight Attendant to drama or HBO Max had submitted it there.

Nominations wise I think:

Drama Series (the show would have replaced This is Us)
Drama Actress (Cuoco replaces Aduba)
Drama S. Actress (Perez replaces Ellis)
Drama Directing (the show replaces Pose)
Drama Writing (the show replaces The Mandalorian – The Rescue)

How well do you guys think the show would have fared in drama?

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

I’m assuming Series and Actress would happen. Directing too but I think it would replace Bridgerton (the Pose campaign might not have been effective for wins but I think it worked for nominations). Writing and Perez would probably miss.

This is pretty much exactly what I think.

I get the impression they really like Aunjanue, she shows up a lot and might be a bit stronger than we think.

I agree with all of these nominations. I’m kinda glad it went comedy though because it had a *better* chance for wins, and it *seems* like a comedy in the style, direction, and writing. Obviously not the plot itself, but it has this lightness to it that is reminiscent of things like TWoWS and TMMM where it’s obviously not slapstick or situational comedy, but it doesn’t *feel* drama, so it seems a better fit in comedy

I agree. I don’t really think re-categorisation is just about the competition, it’s about tone.

Cuoco would have wrongly been runner-up, AGAIN.

One thing I do wonder is what would have happened with Cuoco at SAG. That lineup of Anderson, Colman, Corrin, Garner and Linney felt very tight but as we later found out none of the other competitors in that category (apart from maybe Jodie Comer) were strong enough to spoil the lineup. So I wonder if Cuoco could have slipped in (and who she would have edged out) and if she may have been able to take the win due to a Crown/Ozark vote-split and the lack of a reigning Emmy champion competing.

I literally forgot the word tone while writing my comment which is why I didnt use it 💀

I think this is a very interesting thought. I still don’t think it wouldve happened, but I cant deny that it wouldve been a very real possibility

No additional Emmy wins would have been netted for the series going Drama. It’s best chances were where it was placed in Comedy.

Don’t think it would have made much difference. I think voters have seen it as a show deserving of nominations but not wins.
