This isn’t even recency bias:
Best child performance on TV in recent memory? Perfect casting for a very difficult role in a challenging (but ultimately brilliant) series.

Followed by the six Friends, the gigantic love towards the show has not changed in 30 years thanks to that.
Mandy Moore for This is us, an actress that was seen as inferior by many, was able to convey so much and to make Rebecca one of the most iconic characters of the modern era.

July 4, 2022 at 10:35 pm #1205003742All of the kids from Stranger Things, at least for the first season. And especially Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven – I don’t think any other 10-11 year old would be able to pull off what she was able to do with that character

Finn Wolfhard is hilariously bad…

Iconic? Literally no one watches that show. Look at the low imdb ratings for the latest season.

That’s why I said first season where I thought he was excellent. Season 2 was also quite good. All the others though have been consistently good all seasons

July 5, 2022 at 7:50 am #1205003987To the surprise of no one who pays attention to my posts here – Keri Russell as Elizabeth Jennings in The Americans.
Whoever’s idea it was to cast Keri in that role at that point in her career…whew. Thank you. But really, in 2013 I don’t think she was anyone’s first guess/choice/idea to play an ice cold Russian spy living in the US during the Cold War. And yet, she’s instantly believable the minute you see her on screen and she ends up giving an all time performance across TV and film.
I also haven’t seen anyone mention Fargo. That show was truly perfectly cast up until the last season where I thought they went wrong with Chris Rock. But Martin Freeman, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Billy Bob Thornton, Jean Smart, etc. They all fit so perfectly in that universe.
Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern in BLL come to mind too. Ditto Kim Cattrall in SATC.
As far as playing real life people, you don’t get much better than Michelle Williams in Fosse/Verdon and Emma Corrin in The Crown.
And, finally, some love for those in smaller/supporting roles – Luke Kirby in Maisel and Cameron Britton in Mindhunter immediately come to mind. Harriet Walter in Succession is also perfection too.
