If I recall the network were most unpleased at them not casting an American.

I’ve read that they were open to Hugh Grant and David Tennant for Hannibal. Mikkelsen has a thicker, more unfamiliar accent than either of them and was far less known to American audiences. It was really inspired casting on a lot of levels.

I was thinking about this really incidentally and I don’t think it’s really appreciated enough how inspired Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies was as a casting decision. Sure she was one of the producers who brought the project to HBO but I think there was something cathartic watching someone of her stature (both as an actor but also as a celebrity) playing a woman who was in denial about being in a physically and verbally abusive relationship. The best performance of all time and the best casting decision of all time aren’t things that are necessarily interlinked but the fact that Kidman was absolutely phenomenal in the role aside, I think it really think her playing that role really fit in well narratively considering how there was that duality with Celeste’s character as she was simultaneously a successful and kind woman for people in the community on that show to look up to and a woman who was powerless in the face of a horrific and traumatising ordeal that no one should ever experience.

I think also by seeing one of the most famous people in the world playing a character facing domestic abuse that it really helped shine a light on the issue and how anyone can really find themselves in a situation like that and how hard it is to accept that someone who you loved (and in a lot of cases, still love) so dearly is physically and psychologically hurting yourself for both people in abusive relationships and those who weren’t.

FYC: Better Call Saul and The Good Fight in all categories including Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

    Jean Smart as Deborah Vance!

Variety: “When you start making the list of actors who can play both sides of the coin, be so lightning funny and fast and quick, but then also so dramatic and real, and just bring you to tears at an instant, it’s a really short list,” says “Hacks” executive producer Jen Statsky, who created the show with Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello. “And to us, Jean was at the top of it. Because she is just so incredible at both of those things. And that’s so incredibly rare.”

    FYC:
    J. Smith-Cameron · "Succession"
Elaine May · "The Good Fight"
    Christopher McDonald · "Hacks"
