    imo

    2021:

Genius : Aretha (received 3 Emmy nominations, Erivo got in over a lead of a limited series nominee)
Halston (won an acting Emmy, made it into four other BTL categories, got in at WGA)
The Undoing (even as the show only managed to get Hugh Grant ATL at the Emmys, it was still a big hit that got PGA/DGA/SAG/Globe nominations and landed a nomination below the line for production design without getting nominated at the equivalent guild, showing some support)

    2020:

    – Devs (this was a difficult one because after Hollywood and Normal People, there doesn’t seem to be a show on the same level of support. Devs got four BTL nominations and was decently seen which I guess suggest some support?)
    – Hollywood (it was the second most nominated limited series of the year)
Normal People (received an elusive combination of acting/writing/directing/casting nominations)

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Going back further than 2016 is harder to to know since I assume) if you add the vote totals of both Limited and Movie, you’d end up with the actual 5-8 everytime. Whereas 2017 onwards, Wizrad of Lies and Black Mirror are likely the only Movie to rank high enough to make a combined top 8.

    2017;

    American Crime
    American Horror Story: Roanoke
    ??

    2018:

    American Vandal
    The Looming Tower
    Twin Peaks: The Return

    2019:
    A Very English Scandal
    The Act
    True Detective 3

    2020:

    Hollywood
I Know This Much Is True
    Normal People

    2021:

    Halston
    Genius: Aretha
    The Undoing

The problem the limited field has is that there just seems to be a disconnect with what shows people actually like (or to put it plainly, are actually worthy of awards recognition) and shows that are visible enough for the industry to catch on to them. It happens in other fields of course but more so in this field. In 2020 we had worthy overlooked shows like Years and Years and The Plot Against America that in spite of being on HBO were probably not even in the top 10 in series in the end. Just this year there was Small Axe and It’s a Sin.

Hopefully if we have a strong field this year the contenders that are popular enough to be the three next in line are actually worthy series.
