Just thought I’d open this up to the group. Last year there was a an obsession with scammers, for instance.

My thoughts: The Blackbird/Dahmer thing makes me think true crime very much remains a trend, but limited seems to be struggling to gain traction like it did a few years ago.

Comedy is having a bright spot, too, comedies seem to be doing very well for audiences this last few months.

Hmm I disagree that the true crime obsession has continued to this cycle. Dahmer was a very big hit of course but even it has been faltering a little bit when it comes to the industry guilds. Black Bird did well at the Globes and got 2 SAG nominations but it has also been under-performing with critics in spite of having an 80 score on Metacritic and gotten nothing else at the guilds (not even a WGA nomination) so I think its modest popularity speaks more to it having tapped into a particularly sizable niche in the zeitgeist as opposed to it being a big water-cooler hit. Welcome to Chippendales has just as good reviews as Pam and Tommy, a notorious true crime scandal at its centre and has a strong industry pedigree both on screen and behind the camera and it has just come and gone. Even the true crime shows that landed at the Emmys have been faltering at the guilds with The Staircase getting nothing other than a WGA nomination (which perhaps only goes to highlight how weak the limited field has been this year), The Dropout getting shut out of a barren DGA field in spite of having the director of the incumbent best actress Oscar champ’s performance and an Emmy nominated female director on the ballot and Pam and Tommy getting shut out of SAG completely in favour of the likes of The Patient and The English.

I think what I have noticed with TV this cycle is how audiences and critics have been much more in line with each other this season compared to last and how that has been reflected in the guild performances of several shows. All 5 of this year’s new series WGA nominees have been from shows that have strong audience and critical scores whilst in previous years we’ve had the likes of Loki, The Flight Attendant and Ozark as well as The Deuce, American Vandal and Pen15 nominated in that category. The Crown season 5 received a polarising reception with critics and an okay reception with audiences whilst Ozark‘s final season received an ok reception with critics and a middling reception with audiences and that has been reflected in the guild performances of both shows with the former making it in at WGA and SAG and getting multiple Golden Globe nominations but missing PGA and the latter making it in at SAG, DGA and PGA but getting dropped from WGA and Jason Bateman only getting a SAG nomination this winter awards season. Euphoria season 2 was likely 4th (if not even 3rd) at the Emmys and had a STRONG critical and audience divide and even that has been reflected at the guilds with it missing SAG ensemble (in spite of getting 4 acting Emmy nominations and winning 2 awards) and PGA nominations but still getting Zendaya nominated for awards that she has gone on to win. Wednesday was a massive audience hit that caught winter award nominations for Jenna Ortega and a DGA nod for Tim Burton but also failed to get in for SAG ensemble and PGA.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

based on the globes/sags, a distinct lack of asian representation, even with the globes adding 2 categories.

no sandra oh and squid game around for them.

Do you feel like someone is being specifically snubbed?
