Let the polls begin! There would be an easy answer but I mean Stranger Things literally got in with no above the line support.
Big Little Lies – Nominated for 5 Emmys including two for Supporting Actress.
Reply
Euphoria – Nominated for 5 Emmys including one for Lead Actress.
The Morning Show – Nominated for 8 Emmys including 5 for Acting and 1 for Directing.
Pose – Nominated for 5 Emmys including one for Lead Actor.
This is Us – Nominated for 5 Emmys including three for acting.
Westworld – Nominated for 10 Emmys including two for acting.July 29, 2020 at 9:05 am #1203612323TMS got 8 not 6 nominations

Tech support? I think that’s probably what tipped The Mandalorian over the edge.
Imagine if Succession was a sci-fi family Drama then no other show would have a chance at winning Series LMAO.

Which somehow resulted in zero acting nominations.
Sad thing is they’d have done really well if their season came out last year.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 29, 2020 at 9:20 am #1203612372Is that even a question?
Yes considering Stranger Things got in with 8 nominations (0 of which were in acting, writing or directing), The Handmaid’s Tale got in with 10 nominations despite receiving only three acting nominations, The Mandalorian got in with 15 nominations despite almost getting nothing above the line and Better Call Saul got in with 7 nominations with only three of those being above the line. This also becomes more of a question when Westworld got 10 nominations two of which were for acting and The Morning Show missed casting.

Or The Handmaid’s Tale… The Morning Show is another thing that got screwed over by the removal of the 2% rule it seems.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 29, 2020 at 10:47 am #1203612591I want that rule to be back, things would’ve been slightly different. I think The Morning Show is the obvious answer, that directing nomination says a lot.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 29, 2020 at 10:52 am #1203612598Were half of the program ballots in reversed order? That clearly didn’t help “Westworld”, did it lol? I’m still tempted to vote for it b/c of the nominations haul and clear tech support. I guess that level of support can’t go three ways between it, “The Mandalorian,” and “Stranger Things.” But I’ve heard S3 was really bad, so maybe not.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 29, 2020 at 11:16 am #1203612663Euphoria‘s only other nominations were in contemporary or music categories, so not that. Directing nomination notwithstanding, there seems to have been resistance to The Morning Show, so not that either. Pose did better than expected, so maybe that.
Honestly might have been Westworld. It basically fared as well as The Handmaid’s Tale, unexpectedly returning in some categories and randomly missing others. Plus I never saw the Killing Eve comeback coming and it was kind of in the same boat as Westworld. One place that I did not expect to see Killing Eve was casting, which Big Little Lies also got, so I want to vote that, but like, why was it snubbed in contemporary hair for This is Us?
There is such a steep drop after the top three this year. The Mandalorian could have been fourth.

My gut tells me it was probably This Is Us. It’s the kind of show that can get in without any other major nominations.

I actually have The Mandalorian fourth followed by Killing Eve, Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale and Stranger Things.
I think Killing Eve would have been in the top 4 had the writers kept it but they didn’t. I knew we were underestimating Comer because unlike Westworld it still clung on at SAG (not like that matters so much it turns out when SAG shut out the show with the most acting nominations this year lol) but I never saw that being the case in Series.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 29, 2020 at 12:05 pm #1203612840Very possible that The Mandalorian was fourth in the nominations phase. Writing and directing are just the top three, plus two non-series nominees and Better Call Saul, which essentially had no acting support, as well as scant support below the line, with its editing miss. The Mandalorian got triple editing, double acting and it swept the techs, so it is almost the full package, which is more than The Handmaid’s Tale and Stranger Things can say. Killing Eve actually did quite well, but it also missed writing/directing/editing/cinematography/sound, so that is not great. Any guild misses by The Mandalorian can be chalked up to its late release.
