Seeing as the show has now been nominated in three different genres by all four of the main guilds (comedy at DGA, drama at SAG and PGA and limited at WGA) I thought it warranted asking, where do you think The White Lotus : Sicily SHOULD compete at the Emmys. Not where you think it will but where you think is the best fit for the shpw and/or whether you think the show is a drama series, a comedy series or still meets the criteria of an anthology in spite of Tanya’s presence in the second season.

January 16, 2023 at 7:33 pm #1205248796I feel like this might be controversial but I still feel like it’s an anthology/limited series, I haven’t seen it since it aired 7 years ago but I faintly remember Fargo Season 2 also had returning characters (although they were recast), and the fact that the whole season can be watched without having seen Season 1 makes it an anthology to me. I would feel differently if Jennifer Coolidge was the main character, but she’s part of a pretty large ensemble. If I couldn’t put it in Limited, I’d probably say it’s more of a drama, it feels very similar in tone to Succession to me which I would also classify as a drama.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 16, 2023 at 11:25 pm #1205248899Drama series. It was a limited last year,, caught fire and then season 2 happened.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2023 at 12:59 am #1205248919It’s crazy when you see that HBO has four huge shows up for Drama Series and they’ve never even had three shows getting in for a single year
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2023 at 1:38 am #1205248933It speaks a lot to Coolidge’s presence that people go for Comedy. I think this is a Drama through and through but I hope it stays in Limited so we don’t have to keep having this debate

They should make more comedies.
I’m conflicted about this (drama or limited) because its actors have novelty factor and the motivation is to reward them when you have the chance ie this season only. Also their crew is completely different in each location. It should be taken as an anthology series, with a bit of leeway for minor callbacks. But Mike White needs to stop gaming the system as he did between season 1 and 2.
It’s definitely not a comedy though, it’s a light drama.

January 17, 2023 at 2:22 am #1205248945In my mind it’s a anthology, totally different stories and characters, even the Tanya plot is different.
I remember Fargo s3 having a character from s1 (don’t remember who since it’s been ages) and still competed in limited, I think TWL is the same.ReplyCopy URLPlease! These gays, they're trying to murder me!

Well at least now one of those contenders has significantly fallen in the race so it’s an easier job for them.

January 17, 2023 at 5:46 am #1205249071This all seems to have started with the 2015 “creation” of a “limited series,” defined as a program that “tells a complete, non-recurring story, and does not have an on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.” Last year, language was added that the story arc must be completely resolved within its season and that subsequent seasons of a limited series must cover “completely new ground, requiring no knowledge of the events of the previous season.” This language all appears fairly subjective to me, as I think one could view Season 2 of The White Lotus as a program with no main characters and that one could watch completely fresh, but I am really curious if there will be White Lotus specific rule changes or at least clarifying language this year.

If Tanya had returned for only one episode like Paulson’s Lana did in Roanoke, then it should stay in Limited, but she’s a main character for a 2nd time. This is not Limited and if it stays there, it’d be the biggest fraud ever.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2023 at 6:53 am #1205249149Can I just say from a predictions and prognostication point of view – I hate vague category placements so much (this is not unique to TWL). I just want to predict the shows in a category.
