Something I don’t think enough of us on here are talking about (or even considering) is the possibility that some of the nominees from last year’s barren drama field actually had support behind them and didn’t just sneak in. We all dismiss them quickly, don’t we? “No chance of them coming back”. But in reality any one of them could have had a newfound or existing support base and we’d have no idea as the weak race made it seem like they got lucky.
I’ve compiled a list of people/shows I think fit this bill. If one of them is to surprise us all again, who do we think it will be?
(Dislaimer: for the users who like to read things literally, I am not actually predicting any of these. This is purely a hypothetical)
ReplyKilling Eve is the safest I feel, I don’t understand where it’s was a weak filler narrative come from. I would understand that if it was only Oh nominated for S1 but it also got a writing nom for a pre-Fleabag PWB.
Was S2 a minor letdown in quality by comparison, yes. But unless S3 is worse it should be safe to return as it was clearly on it’s way up.

How tf does Killing Eve fit this bill? It was one of only three shows that got all of Series-Directing-Writing-Casting. It def didn’t just sneak in lol.

To clarify: All these contenders snuck in in the sense that there’s an argument that they got lucky and if last year had been as competitive as this year they wouldn’t have gotten in.
I see a lot of people reference Killing Eve’s nominations but as I said the whole field was barren so you could argue it might have only got Comer, Oh and Writing for example if it had been like this year. Or you could argue the opposite. In which case you should be voting for the show in this poll. This applies to all the contenders I’ve listed. You can argue the field helped them last year or it didn’t – that’s the intention of the thread.

ReplyCopy URLAmong the actors, Esposito. Sullivan is not happening again, Moore is unlikely to repeat in this stacked field, neither is Davis, and Shaw’s also in a stacked field. Esposito has the emptiest field and he’s beloved from his work on Breaking Bad, not to mention he’s excellent in Better Call Saul.
ReplyCopy URLInterestingly, Season 1 of “Killing Eve” was so critically acclaimed, whereas Season 2 had more critical reviews (why were certain plot lines dropped, the ending, Eve’s role diminished, etc.). However, Season 2 landed the Outstanding Drama Series, Directing, and other nominations that Season 1 did not land.
This is perhaps due to the TV Academy’s late acknowledgment of the success that Season 1 was and also, like some people have mentioned, due to so many shows delaying the eligibility date of their shows due to the perception it would not be possible to win against Game of Thrones (like The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Big Little Lies).
My guess is that if Season 3 is strong, “Killing Eve” is the likeliest to return to the big categories, but I think its star had faded, based on the lack of recognition at any awards shows for Season 2 other than Comer at the Emmys.
