Limited currently looks like a ridiculously packed field with so many contenders but most of these (Unbelievable, Watchmen aside) are being predicted without having been seen. Surely with such an excess one is/some are bound to fail?
Belgravia – Julian Fellowes returns after years writing the biggest international hit ever at the Emmys. Traditional period piece could be an apple in a bag of oranges. Starring Tamsin Greig, Harriet Walter and Tom Wilkinson. Airing on unproven network Epix.
Defending Jacob – Based on the best selling novel. Apple TV+’s only shot following the collapse of Truth Be Told. Directed by Oscar nominee Mortem Tyldum. Starring Chris Evans, 4x Emmy nominee Michelle Dockery and 2x Emmy winner Cherry Jones.
The Eddy – Oscar winning director Damien Chazelle comes to TV. And with a musical. Starring Andre Holland and Joanna Kulig. Written by critically acclaimed writer Jack Thorne. Netflix.
Fargo – fourth season of a category and critical favourite. But follows the marginally weakest reviewed season where Emmy buzz for the series dipped a little (even if it still won Ewan McGregor a Golden Globe). As ever, a strong cast including Chris Rock, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley, Glynn Turman and Timothy Olyphant.
Genius: Aretha – latest instalment in a surprise Emmy favourite. Led by recent Oscar nominee and rising star Cynthia Erivo as another recognisable face. Also starring Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance. Not the biggest critical darling but that hasn’t mattered in the past
Hollywood – latest miniseries from Ryan Murphy who dominated this category for the entire last decade. Starring Emmy winner Darren Criss and broadway legend Patti Lu Pone amongst others. Netflix.
I Know This Much is True – Mark Ruffalo hits the small screen. Also featuring: Melissa Leo, Rosie O’Donnell, Archie Panjabi, Juliette Lewis and Kathryn Hahn. Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance. HBO. Will it actually air in time?
Little Fires Everywhere – Based on the best selling novel. Starring and produced by Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Written by Liz Tigelaar. Hulu’s big push.
Mrs America – Cate Blanchett arrives on television. Baity subject material on the network that has dominated this category. All star cast including: Rose Byrne, Sarah Paulson, Margo Martindale, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Tracey Ullman and John Slattery. Created by Emmy winning Mad Men writer Dahvi Waller.
The Plot Against America – Based on the critically revered novel. Baity subject material if a bit more sci-fi than the Emmys normally go for here. Zoe Kazan, Winona Ryder and John Turturro star. Created and written by Emmy winning pair David Simon and Ed Burns.
The Undoing – HBO’s big play featuring perhaps the two stars with the biggest career renaissance over the past few years: Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Written by Emmy powerhouse David E. Kelley and directed by Emmy winner Suzanne Bier. Also starring legend Donald Sutherland.

ReplyVoted Little Fires Everywhere because the producers of American Son and Truth Be Told joining forces is a recipe for disaster. Belgravia and Defending Jacob are so obviously going to flop that I did not even consider voting for them. Devs is already flopping; the ceiling for Self Made is a lead actress nomination. The Plot Against America can flop with awards, but not be a flop overall. Not betting on it, but The Eddy might have a hard time with tone and Damien Chazelle’s contribution might be overstated and possibly even moot, given his lack of experience in television. People have really cooled on Fargo. It basically did not factor into the best-of-the-decade lists and conversation, despite probably having two of the ten most acclaimed seasons of television in any genre last decade.
ReplyCopy URLMrs America, The Undoing and Hollywood are probably the surest bets of the bunch. The others have all weaknesses that could prevent them from getting awards buzz.
Devs already seems like it’s not getting a lot of buzz with critics and thus losing what might have been its biggest advantage (since genre won’t be and network either with resources probably invested in Mrs America).Makes no sense. Why can’t FX air it then?
Because Disney is trying to push the whole FX on Hulu thing. Same thing happening with Devs a week from now.

The show was supposed to be on FX, then the merger happened.Voted Little Fires Everywhere because the producers of American Son and Truth Be Told joining forces is a recipe for disaster.
Why are we acting like the only thing they’ve produced is American Son and Truth Be Told? Reese and her producing partner also produced Big Little Lies and The Morning Show, in addition to Reese producing Wild and Gone Girl. But let’s single out the one flop lol. And one of the American Son producers is an Oscar nominee for Django. Not to mention, the director of Little Fires Everywhere has directed a lot of TV and even a bunch of her films are acclaimed. That’s not to say it won’t flop, but limiting it to “the American Son and Truth Be Told producers joining hands” is lazy.
ReplyCopy URLThey are the most recent things that they have produced (and they are also in the limited field), which makes them the most relevant. Consider how David E. Kelley has been making television for decades, but when considering the prospects of The Undoing, Big Little Lies is going to be top-of-mind as opposed to Boston Legal or The Crazy Ones, since it was recent and the same format (limited series by a film director on HBO with Nicole Kidman).
