I was team Washington for the first few episodes (and the penultimate!), but then Reese came and stole her thunder with the finale IMO. Witherspoon’s character actually changed while Washington’s stayed the same pretty much all season long. That might be more of an issue with the script than with Washington’s work, but it’s what tipped the scale for me. If I were a voter, I’d easily check off both though. I wonder if Washington siphons votes from herself for “American Son,” given how much she’s been promoting that as of late. If she misses altogether, those optics will not be pretty.
Who cares about “optics”? She either has one of the best performances of the year in the eyes of voters or she doesn’t. I’ve been impressed by her in LFE but if voters aren’t then perhaps it’s because they favoured other performances, and not “optics”.
ReplyCopy URLHaving now seen all of the actresses (at least 2 episodes of their shows) who were in awards contention for this race; it’s obvious they actively didn’t vote for Reese. Same in the drama category.
You don’t turn out 3 leading performances in one television year, while being an Oscar winner and industry titan, to get ignored for more deserving actors. They deliberately shut her out for attention.
Remember when they did the same to Julia Roberts for her incredible work in Homecoming? Her first television show? Lol, I’m sure she just didn’t ‘resonate’ with them 🙄.
