After a discussion on how popular vote can change winners in categories like acting from the preferential vote, I was wondering if we would see any change in the Drama Series category when the Emmys used a preferential ballot. Till date, Game of Thrones is the only show that has won under both systems.
ReplyJune 27, 2018 at 12:54 pm #1202574948I think that Comedy Series is really where a switch to plurality would change things, in favour of dramedies.

It had won the PGA, SAG, DGA, WGA (New Series) and Golden Globe. It had the buzz, the prestige and not to mention Scorsese behind it. It eventually lost to Mad Men S4 (it’s only victory that night). This was Mad Men’s fourth consecutive win. I feel BE was quite polarizing which was visible when it was dropped from the Drama series and Lead Actor only in it’s third season. A show like Mad Men, which was loved and respected by everyone, hence, was able to win on a preferential vote.
I also think The Sopranos would have won sooner than S5, not sure when.

It’s harder to guess what would have happened if it won then still moved to drama. I’m guessing it would have done a little bit better coming off a win but still get way less than it would in comedy.
