I’ve tried looking this up but can’t seem to find an answer anywhere. Does anyone know why the SAG awards don’t have supporting categories for TV, despite having them for film? I would understand more if they didn’t have supporting categories for anything and every actor was viewed the same, but they have no problem differentiating when it comes to film. Has SAG ever made an official statement about the reason for why they handle their film and TV awards differently?

They have told me there are two reasons:

The ceremony is only 2 hours.

They already have more TV categories than film categories, which they find acceptable. But they don’t want to have WAY more TV categories than film.

Adding Limited Ensemble category should be completely doable though.

Thanks for your reply and reporting what they said, I had been wondering what the reasoning behind the choice was.

Recent SAG Award winners have sometimes deviated from tradition. Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis from “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” lost the Oscar. Only one SAG category matched Oscar’s five picks this year: best actor. Only two of the five SAG supporting nominees garnered Oscar nominations. Maybe this is the reason for having no support towards supporting categories.
