This might not actually be that bad an idea. Part of the problem with the 2016 revival was that it was trying to recapture the magic of the original run whilst trying to adapt itself to today’s world and the problem was that neither television (especially broadcast television) nor the world was anything like when The X-Files originally aired so it was basically a convoluted mess that had the substance of something that was essentially a massive cash grab. With a new show set in the world of The X-Files that explores the show’s spirit with new eyes (and with an auteur like Coogler behind it) has the potential to be something that is special and quite riveting. Especially because part of what made The X-Files work so well was the allure of its two leads and how compelling Mulder and Scully were as characters. Obviously you cannot remake The X-Files with those two same characters but in 2023 there is a lot of potential to have similarly compelling leads in our diverse world. It would be quite interesting if the roles were gender-flipped with the male character being the accomplished physician and the female character being the quirky special agent or if you had an actor of colour playing the male character (especially an actor of South Asian descent) or one of the characters being queer. There’s a lot of subtext that could be at play with this and if it progresses further into a series I’m excited to see what Coogler will bring to it.

Hate the idea although if it has to happen I prefer your idea of flipping the roles, Gillian Anderson was too damn good.

also these reboots where the prior bar is set so high prevents the new actors from establishing their legacy. How often has it worked?

Nope, the first reboot was bad enough, will they ever learn? Stop using the unprecedented success of an iconic show and make something original…

Helen Mirren - Golda (Best Actress)

I feel like the problem with revivals and reboots (two very different things) isn’t that no show should be revived or rebooted but more that no one really has any good ideas on how to go forward with them other than that they want the ratings and the money. There are a lot of shows that have the potential to be revived and rebooted well with the right idea and a several shows that have actually done it well including the likes of Will and Grace, Twin Peaks and Doctor Who and reached even greater heights than their original run.

I think The X Files has the potential for something similar with a story set in the same universe but with different characters and I’m hopeful with it seeming like Coogler has come up with this idea as opposed to Fox ordering this on their own accord that something is there.

I feel revivals have a better chance than reboots and they are some fine examples. The revivals have aspects of continuity in them.

You make a fair point also with Doctor Who but I guess the difference being the Doctor is the same Doctor but in a different body that creates the continuity.

Maybe you are right about using the same universe but perhaps they should be a group or trio rather than the same duo who can’t be replicated
