“Hunting” so could have taken away one of “Ozark”‘s writing nods, if submitted. Ugh! 7/8 nominees did wonders for multiple shows this year, or voters simply doubled down on the (few?) shows they watched. This goes against the conventional wisdom that voters would watch everything imaginable in the quarantine. Interesting.

Emmy voters were obviously lazy and name-checked these shows based on their own biases.

The Better Call Saul nominations make sense given they’re so closely linked, plus the surge in critical support this year should have been represented somewhere (I assume that’s why so many of us predicted Seehorn).

But those other shows absolutely could’ve been trimmed down to at most 2 slots each. Fire Pink and On the Run are great episodes but I can’t imagine them winning now. Ozark in particular surprises me given how rarely the writers have double nominated Dramas these past few years.

No show has won against itself since 30 Rock in 2012 – so that rules out the 2 Schitt’s & 3 Shadows.

So that leaves it between TGP & The Great, no show has won without a corresponding series nomination since Louie in 2012.

So… Congrats on your first Emmy, Michael Schur

The fact that the Writers decided to be that lazy this year. Where is my PEN15 crazy nom this year? Three Ozarks is ubforgivable.

Didn’t he win for The Office as a producer in 2006? And for writing on SNL in 2002?

Can’t believe the only category I got all correct is Limited Writing.

This looks like an easy choice for Daniel Levy. He can break the “trend,” I imagine.

    My initial predictions:

Comedy Writing: “Happy Ending” for “Schitt’s Creek”
Comedy Directing: “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Drama Writing: “This Is Not For Tears” for “Succession”
Drama Directing: “Fire Pink” for “Ozark”

I think Comedy Writing is solidly between the finales for “Schitt’s Creek” and “The Good Place.” Since I am predicting “Schitt’s” to take home at least one acting trophy (and right now I have them sweeping so I’ll need to really think about that), I could see “TGP” winning Writing since “Schitt’s” will be taken care of elsewhere, but I guess there’s no reasoning for that mentality other than spread the wealth which Emmys aren’t necessarily worried about. I feel like “Maisel” is pretty easily winning Directing, unless “Schitt’s” takes Directing like “Fleabag,” in which case it is sweeping (or damn near). “Succession” kind of feels like a mortal lock for Writing, what with its defending champion status and the “Ozark” three way tie. In that way, I can see “Ozark” taking Directing since it, “The Crown” and “Succession” will all face vote splitting and that branch has been on the show’s side from early days.

    Some stats about Comedy Directing:

Last time a Series Finale won (Schitt’s Creek and Modern Family): 1998 – The Larry Sanders Show (“Flip”). Before that, The Larry Sanders Show was nominated 6 times in Directing, but the finale was its first and only win

Last time a Pilot won (The Great): 2018 – The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Last time a show won without a Series Nomination (The Great, Modern Family, Ramy and Will & Grace): 2008 – Pushing Daisies (“Pie-lette”, pilot). Both Malcolm in the Middle and My Name is Earl (2000 and 2006) also won for their Pilots without a Series nomination.

Last time a show won, lost and won again (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel): 1995 and 1997 – Frasier (“The Matchmaker” and “To Kill a Talking Bird”), Friends won in 1996 (“The One After the Superbowl”)

Last time a show overcame vote split (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel): 2012 – Modern Family (“Baby on Board” won and “Virgin Territory” was also nominated)

I’m thinking “What We Do in The Shadows” wins Comedy Writing. Specifically the ON THE RUN episode, one of the best episodes from that series.
Written by WGA award winner and Emmy nominee for FX’s “Atlanta”, Stefani Robinson.

Drama Directing I have no idea. I doubt they’ll finally give it to Lesli Linka Glatter. If enough people make noice about the fact that it’s been years since a woman has won the Emmy for Drama Directing, and that Glatter is highly overdue, maybe it would compell them to give it to her.

Don’t discount “The Crown’s” Aberfan. That one screams DIRECTING.

Edit: Lord, I forgot Reed Morano won a few years ago. My sincere apologies girlfriend. That historic. 😔

Looking through this thread I thought I’d revive it. I think it’s clear that Watchmen and Succession are locked for Writing wins (regardless of what the latter show’s chances in Series may be). I also think Schitt’s Creek is close to a lock in Writing regardless of whether it wins Series or not.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Not a chance. WWDITS will have its chance next year. Others won’t. And if anyone (not you at all, specifically) has an issue with my opinion, that’s what the ‘ignore’ button is for.

I wonder what this mysterious user means by other shows.

We all know he is obviously talking about the best written nominated comedy this year!

Don’t think there is any other comedy nominated worth mentioning (*grins*).
