Someone noted that this show doesn’t have a thread so I thought I would give it a boost.
Showtime’s synopsis
Wildly talented high school girls’ soccer players descend into savage clans after their plane crashes in the remote northern wilderness. Twenty-five years later, they discover that what began in the wild is far from over.
This show has two timelines, the before and the twenty five years later. The adult versions are played by Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Tawny Cypress. It would be easy to surmise from the description that this is YA, but it very much is not.
I particularly like Lynskey and Ricci in this, though it is broadly an ensemble. Casting of the younger and older versions is terrific. Fairly dark, but really well written. First episode is directed by Karen Kusama.
7.9 on IMDB / 77 from 24 reviews on Metacritic / 8.10 / 100% from 39 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes currently.
I get the impression a number of critics have seen this and wouldn’t be surprised to see it turn up at CCA, particularly Lynskey who I’ve seen cited repeatedly.

ReplyCopy URLDecember 7, 2021 at 4:20 pm #1204635127Just watched the first four episodes and OMG! I’m totally loving this. I absolutely love the tone of the show and how perfectly it balances its themes. The cast is incredible. From the younger versions to the older ones, it’s really good. The casting director for the show deserves a raise. Melanie Lynskey is very good, but I wished more people had been nominated at CCA, especially Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress, who are my personal MVPs.
So excited to watch the rest. Highly recommend.

I feel like the Casting Guild will be all over this.
December 8, 2021 at 3:34 am #1204636581A random question, to everyone who’s watching it, do you consider Christina Ricci supporting or lead? I personally think she’s supporting but I’m interested to know what you guys think.

Supporting.
Credit order is
Starring
Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Sophie Nelisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole WITH Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis.
Given we’ve had 4/10 basically no-one is going to go guest. I guess Lynskey and maybe Cypress are “technical” leads.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 11, 2021 at 3:21 pm #1204644626I can totally understand why the show initially received a 77 on Metacritic but is now growing in critical appeal with each passing episode. I’m finding myself more enthralled by each character and each performance here with each episode. The whole ensemble is uniformly excellent although the one who has stood out the most to me thus far is Lynskey whose characterisation is so riveting in pretty much every single frame the older version of her character is in.
I was worried that the use of multiple timelines would make for a bit too scattershot storytelling but it actually works really well here.

I think so
I looked up Ricci and she’s gotten in at SAG, Emmys, and Globes, all for different things in the past so she’s definitely one to watch here.
Also, the writing is really good, doing multiple mysteries and timelines is really hard.

I can’t take my eyes off of her. I’ve always liked Lynskey but she’s doing something really special here.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 11, 2021 at 5:45 pm #1204644870Also the music supervision on this show is really good (although I guess I’m slightly biased in that regard because I like listening to the era of music predominantly used here haha).

I do too, but I think one of the reasons it’s effective is when it’s used in present day it’s an effective way of signalling the effects and influence of the past. It’s not just the choice of music but where they’re placing them.
Editing wise it’s also quite strong – if you don’t get those transitions between eras done well it could have been an incoherent mess. This show is not flashy but there are quite a few BTL categories it should be a solid contender in.

Definitely supporting. At least on the basis that the whole point of her character in both story and narrative prominence is that she’s sidelined and she wishes to be someone people can follow and get help from.
Melanie Lynskey is comfortably a lead and I’d argue Juliette Lewis is too (her character is arguably the most prominent in the “younger” versions and like Lynskey her character is quite prominent even in episodes not focused on her). Tawny Cypress is borderline.
