Will Viola Davis and Denzel Washington be next?

Nine performers have won both a Tony and Oscar for their portrayal of the same role. While some stayed in the same category, others switched between lead and supporting. Please enjoy our gallery above of the performers who perfected a single role and have the hardware to prove it.
“Fences” stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis reprised their 2010 Tony winning roles in an Oscar nominated 2016 film. Washington pulled double duty by both directing and starring in the adaptation of the classic August Wilson play. At the Tony Awards both Washington and Davis won in the lead acting categories. Now Washington is a Best Actor nominee trying to win Oscar number-three after winning Best Supporting Actor for “Glory” (1989) and Best Actor for “Training Day” (2001), while Davis is trying to win her first Oscar in the Supporting Actress category. That was a controversial decision since Davis won her Tony in the lead race. However, when the play debuted in 1987 Mary Alice won Best Featured Actress for the same role.
If both Washington and Davis should win they will make history as the first two to do so from the same play and movie.
