Amazon began in 1994 as an online bookstore that later diversified by selling DVDs and CDs before it began selling everything under the sun. Not satisfied, they soon launched Amazon Prime and in 2012 would offer access to movies and television programs for monthly membership fees. So, it was a natural next step that they would begin producing their own original content.
