Based on the bestseller by Liane Moriarty, “Big Little Lies” takes place in the tranquil seaside town of Monterey, California, where nothing is quite as it seems. Doting moms, successful husbands, adorable children, beautiful homes: What lies will be told to keep their perfect worlds from unraveling? The project is written by David E. Kelley (seven-time Emmy winner for “Picket Fences,” “LA Law,” “The Practice” and “Ally McBeal”) and directed by Oscar nominee Jean-Marc Vallee (“Dallas Buyers Club”). Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Mackenzie

Kidman is an Oscar winner (“The Hours,” 2002) and a current nominee (“Lion”). She’s also a past Emmy nominee (“Hemingway & Gellhorn,” 2012) hoping to win this time out.
Shailene Woodley as Jane

Jane, a single mom of modest means with a mysterious past, is new not only to Monterey but to the complicated social hierarchy of Otter Bay Elementary School, where her son is a student.
Woodley is looking to score her first major award nomination.
Laura Dern as Renata Klein

Renata Klein is a powerful career woman and anti-bullying crusader at the center of schoolyard politics, both on and off the playground.
Dern is a past two-time Oscar nominee (“Rambling Rose” in 1991 and “Wild” in 2014) and is also a five-time Emmy nominee looking for her first trophy.
Zoe Kravitz as Bonnie Carlson

Bonnie Carlson, married to Madeline’s ex-husband, is a spiritual yoga instructor and a sensitive soul with a strong moral compass.
Kravitz is looking to score her first major award nomination.
Alexander Skarsgard as Perry Wright

Perry Wright, half of the seemingly perfect Monterey couple, is a successful businessman, loving father and devoted husband to Celeste (Kidman).

Ed Mackenzie, is Madeline’s (Witherspoon) stable and loving second husband, who copes with feelings of being second-best and, unlike his wife, believes in playing it safe.

Episode 1: ‘Somebody’s Dead’

Synopsis: In the affluent beachfront community of Monterey, Cal., a suspicious death at a coastal elementary school fundraiser draws attention to the frictions among some of the mothers. Madeline (Witherspoon) and Celeste (Kidman), longtime friends and confidantes, welcome newcomer Jane (Woodley) and her son, Ziggy (Iain Armitage), into their inner circle, much to the chagrin of another mother, Renata (Dern). An incident with the children at school causes battle lines to be drawn.
Episode 2: ‘Serious Mothering’

Synopsis: Jane (Woodley) deflects Ziggy’s (Armitage) questions about why they moved to Monterey. Madeline (Witherspoon) gets news that her community theater production might get derailed, and is outraged over a slight from Renata (Dern). Celeste (Kidman) suggests to Perry (Skarsgård) that they see a counselor. Nathan (James Tupper) and Ed (Scott) meet in hopes of smoothing out the tensions between their wives, and themselves.
