Best Supporting Actor Winner: Sam Rockwell

Rockwell was the clear choice during award season winning the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice Award. Harrelson and Rockwell were the 69th co-stars to be nominated together.

Also Nominated: Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”), Richard Jenkins (“The Shape of Water”) and Christopher Plummer (“All the Money in the World”)

“The Help” (2011)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Octavia Spencer

Spencer was the clear preference. Chastain was able to secure a nomination in part to her great year apearing also in “Coriolanus” and “The Tree of Life.”

Also Nominated: Berenice Bejo (“The Artist”), Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”) and Janet McTeer (“Albert Nobbs”)

“The Fighter” (2010)

Best Supporting Actress Winner:  Melissa Leo

Leo was the clear favorite giving the loud bombastic performance the Academy could not resist.

Also Nominated: Helena Bonham Carter (“The King’s Speech”) Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”) and Jacki Weaver (“Animal Kingdom”)

“Up in the Air” (2009)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Mo’Nique, “Precious”

Farmiga and Kendrick might have spilt their support but it still would’ve been hard to get past Mo’Nique’s moving performance.

Also Nominated: Penelope Cruz (“Nine”) and Maggie Gyllenhall (“Crazy Heart”)

“Doubt” (2008)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”)

Adams might have had more screen time. But Davis’s role is one powerful scene where she went head to head with the film’s star, Meryl Streep, and came out the winner. Wouldn’t you like to see the vote total between Adams and Davis?

Also Nominated: Taraji P. Henson (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) and Marisa Tomei (“The Wrestler”)

“Babel” (2006)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”)

Barazza probably would’ve been the favorite to win if it wasn’t for Hudson’s breakthrough work as Effie White and her performance of its most famous song — “And I’m Telling You.”

Also Nominated: Cate Blanchett (“Notes on a Scandal” ) and Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”)

“Chicago” (2002)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Catherine Zeta-Jones

Zeta-Jones strategically dropped down to supporting from lead, securing herself an Oscar.

Also Nominated: Kathy Bates (“About Schmidt”), Julianne Moore (“The Hours”) and Meryl Streep (“Adaptation”)

 

“Gosford Park” (2001)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”)

The second Robert Altman film to make the list (“Nashville,” 1975). This was also the second time for Smith that another actress playing a maid split the vote (“Othello,” 1965).

Also Nominated: Marisa Tomei (“In the Bedroom”) and Kate Winslet (“Iris”)

“Almost Famous” (2000)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Marcia Gay Harden (“Pollock”)

Hudson was the favorite heading into the Oscars. While McDormand’s role was smaller her scene stealing performance as a concerned mother probably did infact cost Hudson the Oscar. Allowing Harden to win without a Golden Globe or SAG Award nomination.

Also Nominated: Judi Dench (“Chocolat”) and Julie Walters (“Billy Elliot”)

“Bullets Over Broadway” (1994)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Dianne Wiest

Wiest ironically could not take advantage of vote-splitting when she was previously nominated for “Parenthood” (1989).

Also Nominated: Rosemary Harris (“Tom and Viv”), Helen Mirren (“The Madness of King George”) and Uma Thurman (“Pulp Fiction”)

“Bugsy” (1991)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Jack Palance (“City Slickers”)

This was the height of irony as Palance a victim of vote-splitting for “Shane” (1953) would be the benefactor 38 years later.

Also Nominated: Tommy Lee Jones (“JFK”) and Michael Lerner (“Barton Fink”)

“Thelma and Louise” (1991)

Best Actress Winner: Jodie Foster (“The Silence of the Lambs”)

Neither Davis or Sarandon could’ve dropped down to Supporting as they were in almost every scene together. Regardless, even nominated by themselves they wouldn’t have been able to stop Foster.

Also Nominated: Laura Dern (“Rambling Rose”) and Bette Midler (“For the Boys”)

“Enemies, A Love Story” (1989)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Brenda Fricker (“My Left Foot”)

While both Houston and Olin may have lost. Fricker has never had another role to equal her work in “My Left Foot.”

Also Nominated: Julia Roberts (“Steel Magnolias”) and Dianne Wiest (“Parenthood”)

“Working Girl” (1986)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Geena Davis (“The Accidental Tourist”)

Weaver was also nominated for Best Actress for “Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey” against “Working Girl” star Melanie Griffith.

Also Nominated: Frances McDormand (“Mississippi Burning”) and Michelle Pfeiffer (“Dangerous Liasons”)

“Platoon” (1986)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Michael Caine (“Hannah and Her Sisters”)

Caine, a former victim of vote splitting (“Sleuth,” 1972″) finally won an Oscar on his fourth nomination — unfortunately he was not present to accept.

Also Nominated: Denholm Elliot (“A Room with a View”) and Dennis Hopper (“Hoosiers”)

“The Color Purple” (1985)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Anjelica Huston (“Prizzi’s Honor”)

Vote splitting is a possibility but “The Color Purple” was not embraced by the Academy, losing all 11 of its bids.

Also Nominated: Amy Madigan (“Twice in a Lifetime”) and Meg Tilly (“Agnes of God”)

“Amadeus” (1984)

Best Actor Winner: F. Murray Abraham

Abraham was able to overcome vote splitting even though he gave a quieter and conflicted performance compared to Hulce’s loud fun loving Mozart.

Also Nominated: Jeff Bridges (“Starman”), Albert Finney (“Under the Volcano”) and Sam Waterston (“The Killing Fields”)

“Terms of Endearment” (1983)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Jack Nicholson

“Terms of Endearment” and “The Last Picture Show” (1971) are the only two films to win two categories where co-stars were battling amongst themselves.

Also Nominated: Charles Durning (“To Be or Not to Be”), Sam Shepard (“The Right Stuff”) and Rip Torn (“Cross Creek”)

“Terms of Endearment’ (1983)

Best Actress Winner: Shirley MacLaine

In the battle of mother vs. daughter the overdue MacLaine finally won on her sixth nomination after also previously being a victim of vote splitting (“Turning Point,” 1977).

Also Nominated: Jane Alexander (“Testament”), Meryl Streep (“Silkwood”) and Julie Walters (“Educating Rita”)

“The Dresser” (1983)

Best Actor Winner: Robert Duvall (“Tender Mercies”)

Vote splitting might have been a factor but, Duvall was the only American amongst the nominees helping to tip the race in his favor.

Also Nominated: Michael Caine (“Educating Rita”) and Tom Conti (“Reuben”)

“Tootsie” (1982)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Jessica Lange

Lange was also nominated for Best Actress for “Frances.”

Also Nominated: Glenn Close (“The World According to Garp”), Kim Stanley (“Frances”) and Lesley Ann Warren (“Victor Victoria”)

“Ordinary People”(1980)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Timothy Hutton

Hutton became the youngest Best Supporting Actor winner to date at age 20. Hirsch replaced Hackman who was originally cast.

Also Nominated: Michael O’Keefe (“The Great Santini”), Joe Pesci (“Raging Bull”) and Jason Robards (“Melvin and Howard”)

“Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Meryl Streep

Alexander really didn’t stand a chance against the conflicted performance Streep delivered to win her first of three Oscars. And unlike four-time Oscar winner Katharine Hepburn, Streep prevailed against a co-star.

Also Nominated: Barbara Barrie (“Breaking Away”), Candice Bergen (“Starting Over”) and Mariel Hemingway (“Manhattan”)

“Julia” (1977)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Jason Robards

Robards is the only actor to win back to back Best Supporting Actor prizes.

Also Nominated: Mikhail Baryshnikov (“The Turning Point”), Peter Firth (“Equus”) and Alec Guinness “Star Wars”

“The Turning Point”(1977)

Best Actress Winner: Diane Keaton (“Annie Hall”)

While it could’ve been vote splitting, “The Turning Point” lost all of its 11 Oscar Bids.

Also Nominated: Jane Fonda (“Julia”) and Marsha Mason (“The Goodbye Girl”)

“Rocky” (1976)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Jason Robards (“All the President’s Men”)

Robards won for playing Ben Bradlee. “All the President’s Men” and “Rocky” were each others biggest competition at the 1976 Oscars. “Rocky” would go on to win Best Picture.

Also Nominated: Ned Beatty (“Network”) and Laurence Olivier (“Marathon Man”)

“Network” (1976)

Best Actor Winner: Peter Finch

Finch, sadly passed away before the Oscars. Finch was the first performer to win posthumously in any acting category.

Also Nominated: Robert De Niro (“Taxi Driver”), Giancario Giannini (“Seven Beauties”) and Sylvester Stallone (“Rocky”)

“Nashville” (1975)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Lee Grant (“Shampoo”)

This was both Tomlin and Blakely’s only Oscar nomination to date.

Also Nominated: Sylvia Miles (“Farewell, My Lonely”) and Brenda Vaccaro (“Once Is Not Enough”)

“The Godfather Part II” (1974)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Robert De Niro

DeNiro,to date is the only actor ever to win over two co-stars. He might not have been so lucky if John Cazale had been nominated for his work as the weak and cowerdly Fredo.

Also Nominated: Fred Astaire (“The Towering Inferno”) and Jeff Bridges (“Thunderbolt and Lightfoot”)

“Paper Moon” (1973)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Tatum O’Neal

O’Neal made history at 10 years old as the youngest ever to win a competitive Oscar. That record still holds to date. 

Also Nominated: Linda Blair )“The Exorcist”), Candy Clark (“American Graffiti”) and Sylvia Miles (“Farewell, My Lonely”)

“The Godfather” (1972)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Joel Grey (“Cabaret”)

While the trio from “The Godfather” each had their supporters, they were no match for Grey’s Tony winning, scene-stealing performance in the musical (“Cabaret”)

Also Nominated: Eddie Albert (“The Heartbreak Kid”)

“Sleuth” (1972)

Best Actor Winner: Marlon Brando (“The Godfather”)

This was one of those races where regardless of who the other nominees were no one was going to take down Brando’s Mafia Boss.

Also Nominated: Peter O’Toole (“The Ruling Class”) and Paul Winfield (“Sounder”)

“The Last Picture Show” (1971)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Cloris Leachman

The director (Peter Bogdanovich) told Leachman after the filming of her final scene in the film that she had just won her Oscar.

Also Nominated: Ann-Margaret (“Carnal Knowledge”), Barbara Harris (“Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?”) and  Margaret Leighton (“The Go-Between”)

“The Last Picture Show” (1971)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Ben Johnson

Bridges would have to wait 38 years and on his fifth nomination won Best Actor for “Crazy Heart” (2009).

Also Nominated: Leonard Frey (“Fiddler on the Roof”), Richard Jaeckel (“Sometimes a Great Notion”) and Roy Scheider (“The French Connection”)

“Airport” (1970)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Helen Hayes

This was Hayes second Oscar win previously winning Best Actress for “The Sin of Madelon Claduet” (1931) 39 years earlier.

Also Nominated: Karen Black (“Five Easy Pieces”), Lee Grant (“The Landlord”) and Sally Kellerman (“MASH”)

“Midnight Cowboy” (1969)

Best Actor Winner: John Wayne (“True Grit”)

Legendary actor Wayne finally won his Oscar on his third and final nomination. 

Also Nominated: Richard Burton (“Anne of a Thousand Days”) and Peter O’Toole (“Goodbye, Mr. Chips”)

“Bonnie and Clyde” (1967)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: George Kennedy (“Cool Hand Luke”)

This was Pollard’s only Oscar nomination. Hackman would go on to win two: Best Actor for “The French Connection” (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for “Unforgiven” (1992).

Also Nominated: John Cassaventes (“The Dirty Dozen”) and Cecil Kellaway (“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”)

“Othello” (1965)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Shelley Winters (“A Patch of Blue”)

Smith and Redman were joined by co-stars Laurence Olivier and Frank Finlay, making history as the only Shakespearean film to date to have all four leading actors nominated. However, the film has not stood up to the test of time since Olivier appears in black face makeup.

Also Nominated: Ruth Gordon (“Inside Daisy Clover”) and Peggy Wood (“The Sound of Music”)

“Becket” (1964)

Best Actor Winner: Rex Harrison (“My Fair Lady”)

Neither Burton nor O’Toole would ever win a competitive Oscar. Burton was nominated seven times throughout his career. And O’Toole scored eight nominations without a single win.

Also Nominated: Anthony Quinn (“Zorba the Greek”) and Peter Sellers (“Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”)

“Tom Jones” (1963)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Margaret Rutherford (“The V.I.P.s”)

To date this is the only occurrence of three actresses being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the same film.

Also Nominated: Lilia Skala (“Lilies of the Field”)

“The Hustler” (1961)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: George Chakiris (“West Side Story”)

Scott refused his Oscar nomination and rejected the Best Actor Oscar he would go on to win for “Patton” (1970). 

Also Nominated: Montgomery Clift (“Judgement at Nuremberg”) and Peter Falk (“Pocketful of Miracles”)

“Judgement at Nuremberg” (1961)

Best Actor Winner: Maximilian Schell

Schell appears twice on the list against a co-star — overcoming vote splitting once and falling victim to it for “Julia” (1977).

Also Nominated: Charles Boyer (“Fanny”), Paul Newman (“The Hustler”) and Stuart Whitman (“The Mark”)

“Imitation of Life” (1959)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Shelley Winters (“The Diary of Anne Frank”)

This was both Moore and Kohner’s only Oscar nomination.

Also Nominated: Hermione Baddeley (“Room at the Top”) and Thelma Ritter (“Pillow Talk”)

“Anatomy of a Murder” (1959)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Hugh Griffith (“Ben-Hur”)

This was the first of two Oscars Scott would lose to potential vote splitting the other being for Best Supporting Actor for “The Hustler” (1961). Scott would go on to win Best Actor for “Patton” (1970).

Also Nominated: Robert Vaughn (“The Young Philadelphians”) and Ed Wynn (“The Diary of Anne Frank”)

“Suddenly, Last Summer” (1959)

Best Actress Winner: Simone Signoret (“Room at the Top”)

Signoret made history as only the second French Actress to win an Academy Award against a who’s who lineup of nominees.

Also Nominated: Doris Day (“Pillow Talk”) and Audrey Hepburn (“The Nun’s Story”)

“The Defiant Ones” (1958)

Best Actor Winner: David Niven (“Separate Tables”)

Curtis and Poitier spent much of the film chained together possibly making it hard for voters to separate their performances.

Also Nominated: Paul Newman (“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”) and Spencer Tracy (“The Old Man and the Sea”)

“Peyton Place” (1957)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Miyoshi Umeki (“Sayonara”)

Umeki made history as the first Asian actress or actor to win an Oscar.

Also Nominated: Carolyn Jones (“The Bachelor Party”) and Elsa Lanchester (“Witness for the Prosecution”)

“Peyton Place” (1957)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Red Buttons (“Sayonara”)

At the time “Peyton Place” set a record for most supporting performance nominations with four total.

Also Nominated: Vittorio De Sica (“A Farewell to Arms”) and Sessue Hayakawa (“The Bridge on the River Kwai”)

“The Bad Seed” (1956)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Dorothy Malone (“Written on the Wind”)

Malone played a boozy Southern Belle outshining the stars of her film Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall.

Also Nominated: Mildred Dunnock (“Baby Doll”) and Mercedes McCambridge (“Giant”)

“Giant” (1956)

Best Actor Winner: Yul Brynner (“The King and I”)

This was Dean’s second posthumous Oscan nomination. Brynner added an Oscar to the Tony Award (1952) he already won for his signature role of the King of Siam.

Also Nominated: Kirk Douglas (“Lust for Life”) and Laurence Olivier (“Richard III”)

“The High and the Mighty” (1954)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Eva Marie Saint (“On the Waterfront”)

The producers of “On the Waterfront” strategically placed Saint in Supporting Actress although they acknowledged the role as a lead performance. 

Also Nominated: Katy Jurado (“Broken Lance”) and Nina Foch (“Executive Suite”)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Edmond O’Brien (“The Barefoot Contessa”)

Both Cobb and Malden received two Oscar nominations although neither won. Steiger would win Best Actor for “In the Heat of the Night” (1967).

Also Nominated: Tom Tully (“The Caine Mutiny”)

“Shane” (1953)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Frank Sinatra (“From Here to Eternity”)

This was De Wilde’s only Oscar nomination. Palance would have to wait 39 years to win for “City Slickers” (1991).

Also Nominated: Eddie Albert (“Roman Holiday”) and Robert Strauss (“Stalag 17”)

Best Actor Winner: William Holden (“Stalag 17”)

Many industry insiders at the time believed Clift and Lancaster did in fact cancel each other out allowing Holden to snag the prize.

Also Nominated: Marlon Brando (“Julius Caesar”) and Richard Burton (“The Robe”)

“Quo Vadis” (1951)

Best Supporting Actor Winner: Karl Malden (“A Streetcar Named Desire”)

This case might just have been poor timing as “A Streetcar Named Desire” won three acting awards the first of two films to do so (“Network,” 1976).

Also Nominated: Kevin McCarthy (“Death of a Salesman”) and Gig Young (“Come Fill the Cup”)

“All About Eve” (1950)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Josephine Hull (“Harvey”)

Including two Best Actress nominations (Anne Baxter and Bette Davis) “All About Eve” to date holds the record for most female performance Oscar nominations with four total.

Also Nominated: Hope Emerson (“Caged”) and Nancy Olson (“Sunset Boulevard”)

“All About Eve” (1950)

Best Actress Winner: Judy Holliday (“Born Yesterday”)

This loss was mentioned in an episode of “Feud: Bette and Joan” (2017). When Susan Sarandon (another victim of vote-splitting) who played Davis screamed, “I woud’ve won if not for Baxter splitting the vote!”

Also Nominated: Eleanor Parker (“Caged”) and Gloria Swanson (“Sunset Boulevard”)

“Come to the Stable” (Top Row) “Pinky” (Bottom Row) (1949)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Mercedes McCambridge (“All the Kings’s Men”)

McCambridge probably didn’t thank vote splitting in her acceptance speech, but she should have.

 

“I Remember Mama” (1948)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Claire Trevor (“Key Largo”)

This was both Geddes and Corby’s only Oscar nomination.

Also Nominated: Agnes Moorehead (“Johnny Belinda”) and Jean Simmons (“Hamlet”)

“Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Celeste Holm 

Holm would later be the victim of vote splitting twice for “Come to the Stable” (1949) and “All About Eve” (1950). 

Also Nominated: Ethel Barrymore (“The Paradine Case”), Gloria Grahame (“Crossfire”) and Marjorie Main (“The Egg and I”)

“Mildred Pierce” (1945)

Best Supporting Actress Winner: Anne Revere (“National Velvet”)

Arden played next door neighbor Ida which was played by Mare Winningham in the HBO Limited Series “Mildred Pierce” (2011). Blythe played daughter Veda who was played by Evan Rachel Wood in the moder Limited Series. Both Wood and Winningham received Emmy nominations but they both came up emply handed.

Revere would eventually benefit from possible vote splitting winning a year later for “National Velvet” (1944).

Wright to date is the only actress to be nominated for an Oscar for her first three films.

McDaniel made history as the first African American actress or actor to win an Academy Award. The fact that she won over her co-star only makes this all the more impressive.

Mitchell is the first actor to win the Triple Crown of awards: Emmy for Best Comedy Actor (1952) and Tony Award Best Actor in a Musical for “Hazel Flagg” (1953).

Also Nominated: Brian Aherne (“Juarez”) and Brian Donlevy (“Beau Geste”)
