We Are Who We AreDecember 9, 2020 at 11:30 pm #1203907225Was lucky enough to catch Sound of Metal in the cinemas yesterday. Riz Ahmed is beautiful – conveys so much emotion using his eyes and body language. Has your classic break down Oscar bait scenes too!
He is absolutely in contention
Out of the performances I have seen to date I would place him alongside Delroy Lindo and ahead of Gary Oldman (personal preference). Ahmed’s uphill battle will be securing a place among Oscar veterans (Hopkins, Oldman, Hanks). Hopefully his recent Lead Actor Emmy helps with his ‘newcomer’ disadvantage.Since Sound of Metal is only really being discussed here I will add some other thoughts:
I went into this film anticipating a indie film carried by its lead performance. I was pleasantly surprised to be also captivated by the narrative, plotting and setting. The sound design also deserves recognition for radiating an energy throughout the film. Hearing loss was realised through a unique mix of synthetic, alien sounds. This was then contrasted with a focus on particularly intimate everyday sounds (dripping of taps, nature, music). This would be an inspired Sound Oscar nomination. Paul Raci plays a mentor-figure to Ahmed’s character (I didn’t realise he was also impaired actor). I was very impressed by the weight and emotion he brought to the roll. The film includes many other deaf characters which helps ground the narrative. I thought the film had a beautiful message for those with impaired hearing.
I hope Amazon pushes this as an awards contender!Oscar Predictions:
– Best Actor – Riz Ahmed
– Best SoundPersonal Picks (Current)
– Best Picture
– Best Actor – Riz Ahmed
– Best Supporting Actor – Paul Raci
– Best Adapted Screenplay

– Carnivale S2Absolutely devastated HBO cancelled Carnivale back in 2005! That is a story and mythology I need to see in it imagined entirety – a show well before it’s time. I had been putting watching it for 12 years knowing it was cancelled, SO GLAD I FINALLY WATCHED IT! The atmosphere, world building, characters and mythology … could have been big had it been allowed to be fully fleshed out.
Up next on the list:

Where are you on The Good Fight season 4?
Just finished “The Gang Goes to War”. I’m not sure why but TGF was super delayed here in Australia and they still proceeded with weekly releases!!
Another high caliber season. “The Gang Deals with Alternate Reality” should have been nominated for the drama writing Emmy!

I’ll a little bummed knowing that Jumbo and Lindo did not get their character arcs wrapped up before their departed as regulars. I hope the last two episodes offer some kind of conclusion for themOctober 29, 2020 at 4:16 pm #1203810058-

ReplyAugust 27, 2020 at 5:34 pm #1203670940I had no problem with the sound at all, maybe it’s a theatre thing (I remember watching the Last Jedi in another theater and the sound was too loud and then I watched Last Jedi in the same theatre I went yesterday and sound was good). And about the screenplay: yes, it can be confusing, but the concept is very original and once you get the movie’s logic the screenplay does make sense.
I also had no problem with Tenet’s sound. I thought the balance of dialogue, score and sound effects were seamless and fitting to Nolan’s vision. Tenet WILL deserving win Best Sound and I confidently say this without having seen Dune).
Tenet is a Christopher Nolan screenplay which in the past have been highly conceptual and cerebral. They often feature time-bending themes and incorporate theoretical physics (see Memento, Inception, Interstellar). Tenet is on par with these in terms of concept. The logic behind Tenet’s concept and screenplay make sense. There is a lot of exposition that walks you through it. Does the film make “no sense”?…NO! Does the film warrant discussion, reading and a re-watch to fully appreciate it?… ABSOLUTELY!
Please remember that when you go into Tenet that it is not a run-of-the-mill James Bond film nor a Netflix released Friday night action blockbuster. It’s Christopher F**KING Nolan!!
