When the voters watched Parsons’ submission, they’ll realize why the hell Joe Mantello wasn’t even nominated. If he got in then it would have been the perfect submission for him.

ReplyAugust 16, 2020 at 4:36 am #1203648330Jamie Lee Curtis in Freaky Friday
JLC received a Golden Globe nod for the film. And it’s my favorite one when I was a teenager. Love that.
Definitely Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls.

Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina
Alan Rickman in Harry Potter film series but most especially in Half Blood-Prince and Deathly Hallows: Part II
Audrey Tatou in A Very Long Engagement
Andrea Riseborough in W./E.
Gong Li in Memoirs of a Geisha (Though she won the NBR but I thought she deserved more)
ReplyAugust 15, 2020 at 10:52 pm #1203648087Agreed Chicago is a blast and endlessly re watchable. Its a complete fluke in Rob Marshal’s category. He makes an amazing film and then fails every time.
Unpopular Opinion 1: I thought Chicago was great but I would have given Best Picture to The Hours that year.
Unpopular Opinion 2: However, I thought Nine wasn’t as bad as what the critics have said about it. It’s always a pleasure re-watch. It’s dazzling, stylish vignettes give it a contemporary energy that is at times exhilarating to witness. Yes, it’s style over substance but Marshall makes no apology and I love it!
Unpopular Opinion 3: Aside from the Prologue and Guido’s musical numbers, Cinema Italiano is one of the best musical numbers in the film. Kate Hudson’s character was a good addition. That scene is helluva entertaining and utter silly and I think that’s the point of it.
ReplyAugust 12, 2020 at 11:46 pm #1203643244I think Meg, the movie that’s made in this series, is just so hamfisted and forced.
I couldn’t believe that Meg won the Oscar because I do not believe it’s a good movie in the first place. Gosh Green Book is shooookkkdddddttt!
Harrier’s acting is so bad it really makes you wonder what was going on in her brain when the camera was rolling. Her supposedly brilliant audition consists of her looking constipated.
I know! I couldn’t believe she won an Oscar for that. I mean it would have been acceptable if Harrier’s performance is good if not great but she isn’t. Total miscast as Camille.
Corenswet has his bad moments, but he’s mostly just bland.
I disagree with this however. I thought his character should be bland as a neophyte aspiring actor. But what I like about Corenswet’s performance is that for me he was able to sold the desperation and the determination to be a good actor or at least a deserving leading man for Meg in his performance as Jack. Unlike Harrier who’s characterization and performance is obviously one-dimensional (or non-dimensional).
ReplyAugust 10, 2020 at 10:14 am #1203637307Re-watching Agent Carter for the second time since it was cancelled. I already love it the first time and love it even more this time. If only it aired on streaming service or cable channel then the Emmys might have considered it. I mean come on, the production design!!!, costumes!!!, cinematography, music supervision, direction, Haley Atwell!!!!, Dominic Cooper, James D’Arcy. They all deserve better than ABC. My only issue with the series is they could have gotten more women to direct the episodes than only the awesome Jennifer Getzinger. I personally think it would have been more organic for the series to have them under more women’s lens.
August 8, 2020 at 5:16 am #1203633928I just can’t believe we spent two pages talking about Olivia Colman’s tear I have to laugh…
I know it’s funny! As if it can make Colman change her submission! But on the “one eye tears”, you can all name actors doing a tear fall from their eye performance but what I’m pointing out is the impact. The scene calls for it. At least for me it felt essential and not just for the sake of showing an actor cry in one eye. The impact of that scene given the direction, writing, cinematography, make-up, etc, every part of the medium won’t be as effective if she shed tears on both her eyes. Directors and writers can have that tears in one eye in every scene they want but to pull a performance like that so moving the way Colman did, it holds that beautiful scene together and for me makes for a stunning piece of television. One actor I truly admire for this “one teardrop scene” is Filipino actress Nora Aunor in a funeral scene in film entitled Himala which means “miracle” in Filipino.
For the record, I thought Colman is still competitive with Cri de Coeur but HBC just owns that episode and thought the former’s decision to submit it helps her co-star win it more than her.
ReplyAugust 8, 2020 at 1:26 am #1203633809Fully agree. I’ll add that Aberfan is not an acting showcase either. For anyone. An emotional episode yes, but not because of acting. The technical aspects of the episode (directing, writing, cinematography, production design, musical compositions and Sound design) overpower everything else. It would’ve been a waste of a submission for Colman, she really does absolutely nothing worthy of consideration for an award there.
I agree that Aberfan is more of a technical showcase. But the restraint that Colman has achieved in that episode especially with the talked-about “one tear” is a performance that very few actors can do. really, it takes a real talent to achieve that teardrop synchronized with the direction and the moment.
ReplyAugust 7, 2020 at 8:06 am #1203632129What should be Helena Bonham Carter’s episode submission?
I personally think it should be Cri de Coeur as for me it is not only the best episode of the season and one of the series bests, but because Bonham Carter’s performance here is just utterly sublime. Sure, Margaretology gave her that “grand entrance” into the series but she just outshone Colman in another stunning performance on this beautiful finale.
